Assyrian King Sargon Artwork

This design is based off an ancient piece of artwork from ancient Babylon. The lion is part of the famous Ishtar Gate and a lion is an animal associated with the goddess of love and war, Ishtar. I have based this design on the piece located in The Met's collection. I have recreated this lion in my own unique style making a unique take on this famous piece of artwork!

The lamassu is a celestial being from Mesopotamian mythology bearing a human head, bull's body, sometimes with the horns and the ears of a bull, and wings. It appears frequently in Mesopotamian art. Ishtar Gate was the eighth gate to the inner city of Babylon. It was constructed in about 575 BC by order of King Nebuchadnezzar II on the north side of the city. It was excavated in the early 20th century and a reconstruction using original bricks is now shown in the Pergamon Museum, Berlin. This piece was created using digital techniques to make the painting colorful and vibrant.

Ashur, also spelled Assur, modern Qalʿat Sharqāṭ, ancient religious capital of Assyria, located on the west bank of the Tigris River in northern Iraq. During those times city states each had a god. The God Ashur has the same name as the capital city of Assyria. The assyrians also took the local gods of the city states that they conquered back to their capital of Ashur.

God of Ashur with Ishtar gate

This winged lion hails from Ashurbanipal II's palace in Nimrud. It was one of the great stone statues depicting winged animals placed on the thresholds of the palace to protect the king from curses and to impress all who entered. These animals wear horned caps typical of ancient Near Eastern deities. This five-legged lion, if seen from the front, appears to be immobile, but if seen from the other side, it advances. Represented in this way, the lion appears complete both seen from the front and in profile, making clear its supernatural and protective powers from both points of view.
