Joseph Bolitho Johns, better known as Moondyne Joe, was Western Australia's patron bushranger. He was the man no prison could hold, escaping over and over and frustrating the authorities. In the end the government had a special escape proof cell made for Moondyne Joe, but he still managed to find his way to freedom.

Frederick Wordsworth Ward was a bushranger that operated under the name "Captain Thunderbolt" in the Uralla region of New South Wales. Accompanied by a range of off-siders including his wife Mary-Ann Bugg, he ruled the roads and became known as a gentleman bushranger. He held no truck with unnecessary violence or murder, turning away accomplices that had committed an act of either. He was eventually gunned down by a police constable as he tried to cross a creek on foot.

Self-proclaimed "Prince of Tobeymen", Frank Gardiner was a kind of godfather of bushranging. Gardiner introduced the world to Johnny Gilbert and Ben Hall as well as pulling of one of history's largest gold robberies at Eugowra Rocks. His life was full of adventure and misfortune.

Johnny Gilbert was the over the top Canadian bushranger that worked alongside Frank Gardiner and Ben Hall. His propensity for violence and love of frivolity and lawlessness led him to and early grave.

Unfortunately he was also an opium addict who turned on his childhood friend, murdering him in cold blood before dying himself at the siege of Glenrowan.

Forbes was the scene in the 1860s of bushranging activities of the Ben Hall gang. The cemetery holds this grave of Ben Hall who was shot in 1865 aged 27 as well as the now unmarked graves of John Walsh, Ben Hall's brother-in-law who died in 1863 aged 17; John O'Meally, a member of Ben Hall's gang who was shot dead in 1863 aged 23; Billy Dargin, a police tracker who died in 1865 aged 22.
