Cormorant Mugs

Cormorants resting at the lake of Ioannina (Epirus, Greece). The lake of Ioannina ("Pamvotis" or "Pamvotida" lake) is beautiful with all kinds of weather, throughout the year. But when fog falls, so "thick" that you can "cut it with a knife" (as we Greeks say) then everything seems to "dematerialize", every things "out of time, out of space".

Well Worn Pilings Portland Maine by Debra Martz The pilings, originating from piers of the past, remain intact in a collective heap at the cruise terminal in Portland, Maine, even after the passage of many years. I found them interesting in their weathered and worn state, and even more so when a single cormorant landed on one. Amazing to me was its "matching colors" of silver, black, and orange. As I passed by this scene, in Cambria, California, several thoughts passed through my little mind. I'll let you make your own interpretation, but I will say this, I wish we humans could all coexist so peacefully.

I spent the time seeking out a stormy yet sheltered spot to take some safe shots of storm atiyah this afternoon and travelled not too far from my home to the West coast of Anglesey to a spot renowned for its rocky exposed shoreline - Treaddur Bay I had done my homework beforehand and looked online using google earth and checked out all the conditions before setting out so that most of the parameters were within my realm of control and only safety and light to be concerned about. I kept things simple - just smartphone camera and hybrid and decided that ~ just a usual wave seascape could be quite normal... but focussing into the bay I noticed this one Cormorant flying hazardously between the rocks and the huge waves - and so I kept m...

The Ballestas Islands a group of small islands near the town of Paracas located not far from Pisco, on the south coast of Peru. Composed largely of rock formations and covering an estimated area of 0.12 km², these islands are an important sanctuary for marine fauna like the guanay guano bird, the blue-footed booby and the tendril. Other notable species include Humboldt Penguins and two varieties of seals (fur seals and sea lions), amongst other mammals.

A pair of black cormorants. These big black birds of the sea are a very familiar sight on any North American beach. They remind me of scruffy sturdy pirates. Or black dragons, when they spread their wings to dry.

Splash of a Landing by Debra Martz It is fun to watch Cormorants land and take off from water. They always make several splashes when landing and even more on take-off as they sort of get a running start. This was on take-off which I thought was cool with the circular splash made by this Double-crested Cormorant. Captured at the spillway of the Great Salt Plains Lake in northern Oklahoma.
