American White Pelicans Early Morning Feeding by Debra Martz The Great Salt Plains Lake in northern Oklahoma is a wonderful place to catch many birds during Fall Migration. This variety of pelican arrives by the thousands at the end of September and in early October. They work together to herd fish, then go bottoms up like a dabbling duck for the catch. Sparrow In The Pines by Debra Martz We were out hiking in Yellowstone in late summer to enjoy the amazing landscape. Then I heard this little Clay-colored Sparrow sing. I looked up and around a bit and then there it was. Common Gallinule at Edge of Water - Painterly by Debra Martz It's not often that I see the full length of the colorful legs and feet of the Galinule (Gallinula galeata) so I was quite pleased as this one posed on the outer edge of the water. I, also, liked the patterns made by the movement of the brackish marsh water at Leaonabelle Birding Center of Port Aransas, Texas. This was taken from the new boardwalk that runs in a different direction from the one that was destroyed by Hurricane Harvey. I didn't see butterflies but did get several differnt birds! Couch's Kingbird - Dragonfly for Lunch by Debra Martz We heard this kingbird calling as it flew through the treetops around noon at Estero LLano Grande State Park. Finally it landed up high, looked around for awhile, then swooped down and caught this dragonfly. This huge dragonfly!! It worked on it for a while, tossing and tapping on the limb in an effort to try and remove the wings. But in the end, ate the dragonfly, wings and all!!

Who Is Watching Who ©Debra Martz Green Jays are fairly skittish, coming out into the open and quickly flying back into the safety of the thick trees. I was behind a tree trunk and this Jay had been watching my camera lens from some trees farther back. It slowly moved closer, one tree at a time, until it finally landed on a branch so close I couldn't get its full body in my lens. A Jay of the tropics whose range barely stretches to southern Texas. While the snow on the branches is gone the temps are brutal getting below zero at night. One method for birds to stay warm is to fluff their feathers to hold in warm air. We have supplied steady food and water during this crazy, cold winter system and at some points as many as 60-70 of these American Goldfinches have been present.
