This is how this summer is engraved in my memory - difficult, rainy, blooming :) Naive rapeseed, lush lupine, playful poppies, a cradle made of towering thick grass are all ours, native, so familiar and so unknown. And if there was still an opportunity to be so imbued with the beauty of Ukrainian fields, mountains and valleys, if not in the summer of 2020? Thank you, quarantine) We still have something to love.

The first 'inhabitants' to greet us in the parking lot, Columbian Ground Squirrels are some of the most entertaining wildlife at Manning Provincial Park. What I am tickled to call "the Prairie Dogs of the West" were positioned near their network of holes in the ground (or in rotted tree stumps) and often called in an upright position like meerkats or groundhogs (when they weren't chasing or kissing each other). We found plenty at Manning Park Resort and Lightning Lake, staked out near picnic tables and people lounging in the grass. Columbian Ground Squirrels spend the short summer bulking up on fat reserves for their hibernation period, which lasts for seven months!

A cut through the dunes onto the beach at Blyth in Northumberland on the North East coast of England. The piers at the mouth of the River Blyth can be seen on the horizon together with the lighthouse at the end of Cambois Pier. The image has been converted to black and white, but it is also available in colour.
