Off The Beaten Path

The sandy bay at Cullercoats in the North East of England is enclosed by two small piers and was once a thriving fishing village in the early 1800s and is now home to the Dove Marine Laboratory (Newcastle University) and an RNLI Lifeboat station. This image was taken from the North end of the bay on a cold Sunday morning in November and given an artistic filter for something just that little bit different. The image is also available without the filter.

This image was shot just after sunrise on a cold January morning with a red glow from the pink and blue pastel colours in the sky, capturing the attention of photographers and making an unusual shot of St Mary's Island and its reflection in the rockpools left by the receding tide. The island is situated near the town of Whitley Bay on the North East coast of England and is cut off from the mainland each high tide as the water covers the causeway at that time.

St Mary's Lighthouse and island lie north of the River Tyne and Whitley Bay on the North Sea coast of England. The lighthouse is no longer in operation and is now a museum and tourist attraction which is only accessible at low tide when the causeway is not under water. The image was taken on a warm October morning shortly after sunrise with a lovely soft light illuminating the lighthouse and the sand ripples all under interesting cloud formations.

Runswick Bay

Do you remember the 80s? Do you remember three-wheelers? Remember pushing that thumb throttle for the first time and downshifting to pop a poor man's wheelie? Remember 2-stroke exhaust? Remember going over a jump, being in mid-air, and realizing that you're not going to land with all 3 tires on the ground? Remember the challenge of conquering a giant dune in 2nd gear, full throttle, shaking the whole way up until the gas cap came loose and spilled non-ethanol gasoline on your crotch?. Remember good times? Yeah, me too.

King Edwards Bay, Tynemouth is a Blue Flag beach in a small sandy bay sheltered by cliffs and grassy banks which makes it excellent for family outings as well as fishing and water sport. The bay is overlooked by Tynemouth Priory and Castle and is pictured here on a very cold, sunny April morning with the blue sky, sunshine and a rough sea adding to the drama.

St Mary's Island and lighthouse are situated off the North East coast of England just north of Whitley Bay. Although no longer an operating lighthouse, it has become a popular tourist attraction and is captured here on a calm, quiet August morning just after high tide with the lighthouse beautifully reflected in the rockpools close to the causeway.
