Vintage El Morocco Defunct Nightclub NYC Prohibition Era Speakeasy

The Club Royale was housed in a 1909 building located at the southwest corner of South King Street and Seventh Avenue South and named originally for its Scandinavian owners—Louis Tagholm, John Nelson and Niels Jensen—who operated it as a working man’s hotel. Hotel Louisa. During Prohibition, the basement hosted two speakeasies. On the west side was the Blue Heaven (a space later occupied by the Wah Mee); on the east, connected by a secret passageway, was the Club Royale, popularly known as the “Bucket of Blood” and once described by The Seattle Star as “colorful, flourishing and fashionable.” The place appears to have opened in August, 1930, a year after Charlie Louie set up shop across the street at the China

Following the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, 52nd Street replaced 133rd Street as "Swing Street" of the city. The blocks of 52nd Street between Fifth Avenue and Seventh Avenue became renowned for the abundance of jazz clubs and lively street life. The street was convenient to musicians playing on Broadway and the 'legitimate' nightclubs and was also the site of a CBS studio. Musicians who played for others in the early evening played for themselves on 52nd Street.

Sometimes known by the nickname "Scarface", Al Capone was an American gangster and businessman who attained notoriety during the Prohibition era as the co-founder and boss of the Chicago Outfit. His seven-year reign as crime boss ended when he was 33.

This was inspired by all the t-shirts I saw on my vacation that are essentially ads saying "Hey, I was here!" with a miami vice/vaporwave sort of aesthetic. So I wanted to make my own shirt design, but of a real fake place.

The Flapper is an illustration by Frank Xavier Leyendecker, the lesser-known of the two Leyendecker brothers, both of whom were extremely talented illustrators. The image form suggests a young lady maturing into adulthood during the jazz age with her provocative clothing and bright colors providing notional rejection of the conservative mores of behavior and dress that a 'proper' young lady of the time was supposed to adhere to. This particular piece was created as a cover for Life in 1922, but saw a resurgence in popularity as a poster in the '70s.

The Famous Door was a jazz club on New York's 52nd Street. It opened in 1935 and was one of the major clubs on the street, hosting leading jazz musicians until 1950, through changes of location and periods of closure. The Famous Door opened at 35 West 52nd Street on March 1, 1935. Among its initial backers were the radio bandleader Lennie Hayton, who helped promote it, and musicians Jimmy Dorsey and Glenn Miller. Louis Prima performed on the club's opening night. The club was intended to provide a reliable venue for swing musicians and a place where they could gather, but other customers were attracted by the door inside (autographed by visiting celebrities) which gave the club its name, the fine music, and drinks that started at fifty cent
