Lumbar spine. Coloured X-ray of four lumbar vertebrae of the human spine, seen in antero- posterior view. Five lumbar bones are found in the lower back, with those here being: L1 (at top) to L4 (at bottom). Part of L5 which articulates with the sacrum of the pelvis is seen below L4. The lumbar vertebrae are the largest of the un- fused vertebrae in the backbone. Each vertebra comprises a wide disc-like body, with transverse bony processes projecting out sideways. These bony processes are muscle attachment points. Between each vertebra is a cartilaginous disc. A canal inside each vertebra accommodates the spinal cord. The spine is made up of 33 vertebrae.

The seven cervical neck vertebrae are the smallest, lightest vertebrae in the spine; they support the head and neck and allow the skull to turn and nod. Nodding occurs when an individual flexes and extends the neck. Flexion, a bending movement, occurs when the angle between the articulating cervical bones decreases and extension occurs when the angle between the cervical bones increases. This image may depict whiplash, the forcible sudden bending of the neck forwards and backwards which may cause neck injury. See images P116 726-728 for extension of the neck.
