A view looking across the River Thames at Marlow in Buckinghamshire. In the background is the fine suspension bridge opened in 1832 and designed by by William Tierney Clark. This is also the model for the Szechenyl Chain Bridge over the River Danube in Budapest. Next to the bridge is the Compleat Angler Hotel. This stretch of river is famous for rowing, having produced Olympic champions such as Sir Steve Redgrave.

The River Thames as it flows through Reading, the county town of Berkshire in England. This is the scene just downstream from Caversham Bridge (in the background) linking the town centre of Reading with Caversham on the north bank. Houses, flats, offices and a few restaurants line the riverbanks here. The Thames was once the main route into Reading - particularly in medieval times when the large and powerful Reading Abbey was the centre of life and commerce. Now it's busy with leisure craft. The view from Windsor Town Bridge which links Eton with Windsor in Berkshire, England, looking downstream towards the weir and lock. River transport was always important here particularly with the royal palace at Windsor. There has been a bridge on this site since at least the C12th when records show tolls of the equivalent of £4.33 being paid to a landowner, Osbert de Bray, for boats passing beneath the bridge. The scene walking by the lock at Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. This side of the lock has a profusion of flowers whilst on the island, next to the lock keeper's cottage, are neat gardens. In the background the river rushes through the weir before flowing onward to Pangbourne and Reading. At this point the Thames passes between the Chiltern Hills and the North Wessex Downs - this is known as the Goring Gap.

The lock keeper's cottage at Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. Situated where the Thames flows between the north Wessex (Berkshire) Downs and the Chiltern Hills known as the Goring Gap. The first lock here was a flash lock with paddles instead of gates. The first pound lock was constructed in 1787 using oak. The rather fine lock keeper's cottage dates from 1879, just before the lock was rebuilt in 1886. The last rebuild was in 1921 with a refit in 2003.

A digital painting from my original photograph of the lock at Benson in Oxfordshire. This can be reached via the Thames Path from Wallingford and, after crossing the adjacent weir, the walk can be continued to a very welcome riverside cafe and restaurant. The lock as we see it dates from 1870 but the first one was built in 1788 by the Thames Navigation Commission. Here a boat is passing through on its way upstream to Shillingford and then on to Abingdon and Oxford.

Behind us the Thames flows on to Pangbourne and Reading and ahead is the route to Wallingford and Oxford. Here the river passes between the North Wessex Downs to the south and the Chiltern Hills to the north in a passage known as the Goring Gap.

The Kennet and Avon Canal as it passes through the village of Pewsey in Wiltshire, England. This is the scene just above the bridge at Pewsey Wharf with narrow boats moored on the northern bank. This section of the canal was opened in 1810. The Kennet and Avon was designed to join Reading with Bristol and was constructed between 1794 and 1810. The coming of the Great Western Railway however spelt the end of the canal and it gradually fell into disuse.After restoration it was fully opened again in 1990. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

Standing on the side of the river lock at Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, looking over to the white painted lock keeper's cottage and the wooden office. The top gates are open and the lock chamber is full waiting for the next boat travelling downstream to enter. The weeather's been hot so there are umbrellas over control boxes to offer shade to the operator!

Next to it is the much more modern building of Reading Canoe Club whose members can be frequently seen training on the river. This is a busy stretch with leisure boats and cruisers mixing with rowers and canoeists - and the resident swans and geese!

Approaching the bottom gate of Garston Lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal near Theale in Berkshire, England, Only reachable on foot by the towpath it is close to a busy bridge carrying the M4! This is one of only two turf-sided locks still in existence on this waterway and is a Grade 2 listed construction. Part of the original Kennet Navigation between Reading and Newbury, it was constructed in 1718-23 under the supervision of engineer John Hore of Newbury. The entire canal was completed in 1810.

The tranquil view from the towpath near the Weavers Cottages in West Mills, Newbury belies the once-bustling corn mills powered by the River Kennet. Hovis bought the mill in 1921, which was then sold in the 1950s. The tall granary building across the river stands as a testament to its industrial history. The swing bridge on the right leads to the town centre, while the mill's sluice gates can be seen on the left. The reflections of the mill buildings and trees on the calm water of the Kennet and Avon Canal.

The River Thames as it flows through the villager of Cookham on its way to London and the sea. The Thames Path is a long-distance trail which follows the river all the way from Cricklade in the Cotswold Hills to the Thames Barrier in Greenwich, London. Cookham, on the banks of the Thames is a village lying in the furthest north-east corner of Berkshire, England. Here the artist Sir Stanley Spencer lived and set many of his paintings. Just below the swing bridge carrying the road over the Kennet and Avon Canal at Sulhamstead in Berkshire, England. The surrounding buildings are reflected in the water and the whole scene is bathed in late afternoon sunlight. The Kennet and Avon Canal, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Thames and Avon rivers, providing a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading. The canal, once almost derelict, was restored in the late 1900s, being fully opened in 1990.

The Bridge Inn is a nice restaurant located by the Union Canal at Ratho, Midlothian, Scotland. The bridge in question (on the left) carries the main road into Ratho. The Kennet and Avon Canal as it passes through Newbury in Berkshire. This scene, taken from the West Mills swing bridge shows the canal as it heads towards the centre of the town, about to pass through Town Lock. On the right bank is the site of West Mills - Newbury was once a busy agricultural and woollen textile manufacturing centre. The tower of St Nicolas church, restored during the early 1500s stands above the surrounding buildings.

Wallingford is an ancient and picturesque market town on the Thames between Reading and Oxford Here was one of the most important Royal castles in England. The first mention of a bridge was in 1141 when King Stephen beseiged the castle and Queen Matilda.The present bridge apparently has traces of the medieval structure.

A narrow boat has just passed through Woolhampton lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal at Woolhampton in Berkshire, England. This lock was constructed between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of the engineer John Hore of Newbury. It was part of the Kennet Navigation - that is part river and part canal. The Kennet and Avon canal was constructed to join Bristol and London via Reading making the transport of goods smoother. It closed due to the Great Western Railway but was reopened in 1990.

Looking upstream from the road bridge to Goring over the River Thames at Streatley. On the left are the newly refurbished buildings of the Swan Hotel. Its origins date from the C17th when it was apparently opened by the first owner, Francis Swan. In 1970 it was famously bought by Danny La Rue. The present owners have recently extensively refurbished it. The Thames path skirts the hotel before continuing along the river bank to Cleeve Lock and on to Wallingford.

Walking along Kennetside in Reading on a sunny day in early autumn. This is almost at the point where the River Kennet meets the Thames. In front is the bridge taking the railway line to London Waterloo over the river and in the background are the gantries of the Great Western line to Paddington which crosses the river a little further on. Just past the first bridge on the right is the site of the old Reading gasworks, the last gasholder being demolished in March 2022.

The lock at Aldermaston on the Kennet and Avon Canal. This is the view from the wharf next to the swing bridge. The lock was built between 1718 and 1723 being supervised by John Hore a noted engineer from Newbury. It was originally turf sided but was enlarged in the mid 1700s and given scalloped brick walls. These were heightened in 1984 during restoration. The nearby building was once a brewery founded in 1770 and Its beer barrels would have been shipped from this busy wharf.

Approaching Sulhamstead Lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal in Berkshire. It was originally constructed between 1718 and 1723 under the direction of the engineer John Hore from nearby Newbury and has a rise and fall of 4ft 1 inch. The canal was designed to join the Avon and Kennet rivers allowing goods to be transported between Bristol and London via Reading. It fell into disuse in the early 20th century but was restored later in the century and is now busy with leisure boats.

The Patuxent River is a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay in the state of Maryland.

Caversham Bridge which spans the River Thames joining Reading town and Caversham. The first bridge here was built c1163. During the Civil War a skirmish on the bridge resulted in the Reading side being rebuilt with a wooden drawbridge added. This was later painted on canvas by JMW Turner. The present stone and concrete bridge dates from 1926. To create this image my original photograph has been given an oil pastel finish.

It's early spring: the trees are just beginning to bud and the boats moored alonside the bank are getting ready for the summer. This section of the canal began its construction in 1718 under the supervision of engineer John Hore of Newbury and in 1724 the length between Reading and Newbury was opened. The scene looking from the toll bridge over the River Thames to the church and houses clustered round the millpond at Whitchurch on Thames in Oxfordshire, England. Whitchurch is on the north bank of the river, opposite the village of Pangbourne in Berkshire on the south bank. The toll bridge connects the two. The church is the parish church of St Mary, originally medieval although it was extensively rebuilt in 1858 by the architect Henry Woodyer.

The scene as the Kennet and Avon Canal approaches the western end of Newbury in West Berkshire. This area, West Mills, was once a hive of activity where wool and woollen products were loaded and unloaded to and from canal boats to be transported to London via the Thames at Reading or to Bristol and its docks to be exported abroad. Now warehouses and workshops have been reaplaced by or converted into flats and houses and the boats are for leisure.
