Winchester England Mugs

By the Priory Gate to Winchester Cathedral sits this beautiful Medieval group of buildings. On the left is Cheyney Court which dates from the C15th and was once the bishop's court house. It has a mellowed stone ground floor and fine half timbering above with diamond-paned windows. The building next to it was the Cathedral's stable block. Winchester is an ancient city with many similar buildings - and was the capital of Wessex - and England. A digital drawing from my original photograph.

St Cross Hospital lies across the water meadows from Winchester in Hampshire, England. its almshouses provide a living for 25 elderly men. Rising above the almshouses and towering above the meadows is the magnificent Norman church which echoes nearby Winchester Cathedral. This is a lovely, peaceful place and the timelessness has been accentuated in this photograph with toning and texture. Founded between 1132 and 1136, this is the oldest surviving charitable institution in the United Kingdom. It was founded by Henry of Blois, Bishop of Winchester, grandson of William the Conqueror and younger brother to King Stephen of England. St Cross is also the largest medieval almshouse in Britain!
