The red iron in the dunes is emphasised at sunrise by the low angle of the rising sun. (Featured in African Beauty & Others.) The dunes are either side of the dry Tsauchab River. An occasional tree dots the river flats. Stretching 1,600 kilometres (1,000 miles) in length, but averaging a width of only 110 kilometres (70 miles), the Namib Desert is home to the highest sand dunes in the world up to 340 metres high. Desert elephants or desert-adapted elephants are not a distinct species of elephant but are African bush elephants that have made their homes in the Namib and Sahara deserts in Africa. Namibia's elephant population is growing at about 3.3 percent per year.

Looking down from the rim of the canyon the Tsauchab River flows though the Sesriem Canyon, but it is usually as dry as in this image. At the entry to Sossusvlei is the Sesriem Canyon. As a result of erosion over many centuries, a narrow gorge of about one kilometre in length was formed about 30 to 40 metres deep. Sossusvlei, Namib Desert, Namibia, Africa.

It's a hike to get there, but SO worth it. It's like standing on another planet as the sun rises and the shadows and colours change constantly. Deadvlei is a white clay pan located near the more famous salt pan of Sossusvlei, inside the Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia. Also written DeadVlei or Dead Vlei, its name means "dead marsh" (from English dead, and Afrikaans vlei, a lake or marsh in a valley between the dunes). The pan also is referred to as "Dooie Vlei" which is the (presumably original) fully Afrikaans name.

The long lived (male) Welwitschia (Welwitschia Mirabilis) plant, a "living fossil" can be seen growing beside fossils from the Petrified Forest situated Aba Huab River valley west of Khorixas, Damaraland, Namibia, Africa. The Welwitschia has a low trunk and two leaves that divide and sprawl on the Namib gravel for the entire life of the plant, which can span many hundreds of years. If this weren't enough, Welwitschia is a gymnosperm related to Mormon Tea (Ephedra) and produces seeds in cones, not from flowers. An individual Welwitschia plant produces either male or female cones, but never both. The age of the plants is difficult to assess, but they are very long-lived, living 1000 years or more. Some individuals may be more than 2000 yea...
