My portrait of legendary horror host Vampira (Maila Nurmi) in her natural habitat.

Vampira was everywhere for about 15 minutes in the 1950s. Then she challenged the might of ABC television and was crushed under corporate foot. A statuesque, blond Teutonic goddess, Vampira (born Maila Nurmi) preferred to run with the weirdos, turning horror costuming into fashion and setting the stage for goth. Nurmi would have turned 100 years old on Dec. 11, 2022. Her birthday was marked with events around Los Angeles, including a gathering at Hollywood Forever and screenings of Plan 9 from Outer Space and Ed Wood at the American Cinematheque. This is the poster I created to promote the various birthday events.

Before there was Elvira, there was Vampira! She hosted The Vampira Show before acting in the cult classic Plan 9 From Outer Space.

The Amazing Criswell predicts your future! Criswell was an American psychic known for wildly inaccurate predictions. He appeared in two films directed by cult cinema icon Ed Wood—Plan 9 from Outer Space (1957) and Night of the Ghouls (1959)—and also appeared in Orgy of the Dead (1965), which was written by Wood.

Tor Johnson, was a Swedish professional wrestler and actor. As an actor, Johnson appeared in many B-movies, including some famously directed by low budget icon Ed Wood. In professional wrestling, Johnson was billed as Thor Johnson and Super Swedish Angel.

Plan 9 from Outer Space is a 1957 American independent science fiction-horror film produced, written, directed, and edited by cult cinema icon Ed Wood. The film was shot in black-and-white in November 1956 (under the shooting title Grave Robbers from Outer Space) and premiered on March 15, 1957 at the Carlton Theatre in Los Angeles. Re-titled Plan 9 from Outer Space, it went into general release in April 1959 in Texas and several other Southern states before being sold to television in 1961. Plan 9 From Outer Space is generally considered to be "the worst movie ever made".

Vampira was the creation of actress Maila Nurmi. She was the host of a horror show in the 1950s and this is my tribute to her.
