A4 Pacific Class - Union of South Africa, October 2018 The streamlined shape of the A4 Pacific class of locomotives set them apart from the rest in 1930s passenger rail travel in Great Britain. Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), 35 of the locomotives were built between 1935 and 1938 at the LNER's Doncaster locomotive works. The most famous A4 of them all was of course the Mallard, which to this day holds the world record as the fastest steam locomotive of all time, reaching a speed of 126 miles per hour on the 3rd of July 1938. So, it was a great privilege to travel on a train hauled by this A4, the Union of South Africa. The locomotive was originally named 'Osprey' and had the LNER number 4488. ...
