Buildings anchor me to childhood, their faces ageing, their modernity replaced by decay. And yet here they remain, as they have always done so since my childhood. First seen half a century ago, I remember the building, passed fleetingly on the way to pantomimes and toy shops, to dental appointments and the wonders of the museum quarter. The style evokes a halcyon period of hope, of growth and rebuilding after the war, it tingles with the spirit of the 1950s and 60s. Of all the corners and places on earth, Hull is the only one I have always known. I paint it repeatedly, recreating embers of belonging. The excitement of plunging into a new American cityscape, to lose myself in the streets, alone and unseen, exploring, looking up, relishing the novelty of architecture and colour. I spotted this corner of a purple building, a traffic sign adding a burst of colour, like a squirt of lime in a drink. Windows reflect light back at me. The sky struggles to be seen over the rooftop. A corner of Brooklyn. This work is rich in colour, evocative of a slice of American urban life.

A walk across the river Hull took me to a road called Strawberry Street, a place of industry and urban landscapes, a place that was quiet, at this time of day even desolate. I remembered times long gone, half a century ago when this was the area where my father worked, in a factory surrounded by walls and wire, red brick and the scent of tar. Seagulls woop. Trucks rumble by in the distance, fresh from the ferry port. And I stop to admire the pub, closed now, its net curtains hiding the interior. It reminds me of Victorian times, of foggy nights and the ghostly sound of piano music perhaps. But maybe Strawberry Street is playing tricks on me. This work makes an ideal souvenir of Hull, a great gift, or a perfect collection starter.

A wonderful old American cruises the streets of Havana, a raspberry ripple of excitement, a wonderful pink shade, the hue of peach. It reminds of the 1950s, of sundaes in diners, topped with whipped cream and crushed nuts, of innocence, of simplicity. The buildings retain and radiate heat, a precious patch of shade from a languid tree. I am drawn by the varied colours of the houses, some minty green, cool like a mojito on ice, others orange and pink, succulent and sweet, creamy and soft. This work is full of colour, vibrant and a wonderful gift, a great addition to any collection.

The Royal Mile has always drawn me. A mysterious and perpetually shadowy place of ghosts, bloodshed and drama, the embodiment of Scottish history. Decades ago, on summer holidays, tartan-trousered guides, playing to the audience in hammed up accents, to the palace, to the now defunct wax museum and to the Castle, eager for the drama of the one o’clock gun. It was darker then, before the opening of the Scottish Parliament, with the alleys and closes distinctly insalubrious. I still love to venture down here, often a night when the spirits hint at their presence, when the moon hangs over the kirkyards. The work depicts a brightly painted building near the foot of the street. A perfect gift, a great memory of Edinburgh.

The buildings are solid, as though they have been here forever. The sky is blue, but it is cold, the thin light not reaching the street anymore. A street in Edinburgh. This work is rich in details and in colour. It is atmospheric and unusual. A great gift, a wonderful souvenir of Scotland’s capital city.

I love this view of Hull. I can see all the city from here. A place I have known all my life. A place of childhood. Hull excites me for this reason. Walks of rediscovery and reconnection, a place of dark shadows and ancient cobbles, of exciting post-war architecture and nostalgic pilgrimage. I love this city. This work sets the city centre in one scene, under a East Yorkshire sky.

Flowers And Houses In Edinburgh Terrace

A long walk on the lower edges of the New Town, soothed by the gentle heat, refreshed by the air that hints of lands beyond the Forth, of pine and heather and sea salt. The sky is so blue, so deep. It is a unique light, a rare treat, casting a spell of sorcery and magic, turning the stone to gold and the windows to crystal and sapphire. This view is rich in vivid colour, rich in detail and rich in detail. It makes an ideal gift, a wonderful addition to any collection.

A day in Honfleur, golden memories, fleeting happiness. Mid summer, and days of freedom stretch behind and ahead. I wander alone down a street, the heat palpable, dry, and the sound of my steps echoing from white walls. Everywhere is light; bright and clear and pure light, with squares of delicious shadow and shade. Muffled sounds from within, from behind dark windows, snippets of piano music, the clatter of pots, a film on TV. I want to stay, to linger in this magical world of light and shadow and heat. The work is rich in detail and yet simple. It oozes heat and light. A perfect antidote to dark times and long winters.

Walking east, across the river Hull, I enjoy the stillness of Sunday morning. The pavement already feels warm, a scent of tarmac and the brine of the Humber. Unfamiliar now, memories of childhood stirred as I remember the direction of the road. I pause outside a pub, and I decide I want to paint it, enjoying its solidity and nostalgia. There is a red lion over the door, red bricks and chalk boards, an invitation to enter and enjoy a cheerful evening. The work is full of colour, a perfect souvenir of Hull, a great gift.

From the medieval heart of Edinburgh, on the Royal Mile, where ghosts and the souls of martyrs linger, a small street drops sharply down to what was once the Nor Loch, a filthy lake. Now it is the site of the railway station and genteel Princes Street Gardens. Cockburn Street is now home to some hip cafes and shops, a pleasant place of tourists and eternal vacation, the air scented with frying bacon, hints of Mexico, the tang of hops. The solid Edinburgh stone houses look down, shadows and 'closes' beckon, and there is a gathering senses of mystery. This work is a fusion of realism and bright naivety.

A lovely view of a French kitchen

This work, vivid and full of atmosphere, depicts a Parisian street under a blue sky. Yet shadows gather over the cobbles and there is a sense of mystery. I love wandering around Paris, especially early in the morning, when all is still, and the air is crisp, scented with coffee and fresh bread. This work is a lovely souvenir of Paris, and a great addition to any collection.

A typical London scene. By the side of a Victorian canal, where nature breaks out in a riot of green, a man heads up the steps, to greet his friends. Where next for him? The pub perhaps, for a Saturday afternoon late lunch. Or maybe a Camden cafe for a slice of chocolate cake. London is beckoning him with a million possibilities. The sky and bricks radiate heat. There is a scent of mulch, the gentle hum of buses. An ideal souvenir of London.
