A black and white image of Princess Coronation Class 6233 Duchess of Sutherland steam locomotive built in 1938 for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). It was built for express passenger services, including the Royal Scot service between London and Glasgow. It was retired from British Railways in 1964 and was saved from being scrapped by Billy Butlin who displayed it at the Heads-of-Ayr holiday camp in Scotland. It's now fully restored in LMS "Crimson Lake" and photographed here on the Severn Valley Railway at Highley Station in Shropshire, England.

A black and white image of LMS Royal Scot photographed on the Severn Valley Railway at Arley in September 2015. This was her first appearance in steam since a major overhaul taking several years. Royal Scot was built in 1927 by London Midland & Scottish Railway for the express service from London to Birmingham, Manchester through to Glasgow. She was chosen to appear on behalf of Britain at the 1933 'Century of Progress' exhibition in the USA and toured the USA and Canada covering 11 194 miles.

A black and white image of Tornado on loan to the Severn Valley Railway leaving Highley station on an Autumn afternoon in October 2015. Tornado is a Peppercorn class A1 Pacific 4-6-2 completed in 2008 to the original specification. It's the only example of an LNER Peppercorn Class A1 in existence, as all the original A1 locomotives were scrapped without preservation.

A black and white image of BR Fairburn 4MT No. 42073 at Lakeside Railway Station, Windermere in the English Lake District. This Locomotive is on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway at the southern end of Lake Windermere, running along the Leven Valley. Only two Fairburn 4MT Locomotives have survived into preservation and they are both based on this railway!

Vintage British Travel Poster: Dunluce Castle in Northern Ireland

A black and white image of Great Western Prairie engine 2-6-2, number 5541 built in 1928 at Swindon and preserved on the Dean Forest Railway in Gloucestershire. This engine had undergone a nine year restoration and returned to service on the Dean Forest Railway on the 19th April 2014. Captured here on the first weekend in May in the spring sunshine, looking as good as the day she left the Swindon works over 85 years ago!

Engine 5541 is a resident engine on the Dean Forest Railway with Engine 5521 as a visiting locomotive. 5521 is painted in London Transport colours and carries the number L150 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Metropolitan line.

Steam Dreams rail tour from Cardiff to London Paddington on 1st August 2019, pulled by B1 Mayflower and 44871 LMS Stanier Black Five. It’s not often a steam tour is a double header. Mayflower, an LNER Thompson Class B1 as captured here at sunset as she passes through Gloucestershire.

A black and white image of Great Western Railway locomotive Bradley Manor photographed on the Severn Valley Railway in 2006 set against a glorious evening sky. The Great Western Manor Locomotives were lighter utility engines used on both passenger and freight. Bradley Manor was built in 1939 and withdrawn from service in 1965.

Ex GWR Large Prairie engine 5199 spent most of its working life in the Birmingham area based at Tyseley from 1934 to 49. It is photographed here in the Forest of Dean, visiting from the Llangollen Railway. The image depicts the engine as she would have worked, pulling a local passenger service on a branch line.

The Great Western Railways roundel, or shirt button was used on Engines and rolling stock in the period between 1934 and 1942.

A black and white image of the picturesque Goathland Railway Station on the North Yorkshire Moors. Goathland was the home of the British TV program Heartbeat. The photograph has a British Railways Class 4MT locomotive arriving tender first with a train from Pickering.

A black and white image of Repton, a Southern Railway "V Class" - better known as the "Schools Class" as all locomotives were named after English public schools. The class was the most powerful 4-4-0 ( wheel arrangement) ever built in Europe. Repton spent some time on the Cape Breton Steam Railway in Canada before returning to Great Britain. Without the relevant token the train can't proceed along the single track sections. Engine 2857 was built in Swindon in 1918 and was in service until 1963. This class of engine (2800) was responsible for hauling most of the long distance heavy freight trains on the GWR / BR western region for almost 60 years!

This is a drawing of an English Electric Type 3, or BR Class 37 in green. The Class 37 is one of my favourite diesel locomotives with the distinctive noses at each end of the locomotive. I used to have a poster of one of these on my wall when I was a child, so it was an easy choice to draw this one!

British Railways diesel-hydraulic Warship Class 42 locomotives entered service in 1958. Pictured here is "Onslaught" number D832 on a guest appearance at the Dean Forest Railway in Gloucestershire.

It could be 1965! A class 25 Sulzer Bo Bo in British Railways two tone green livery, pulls a rake of BR red coaches through lush green moorland in Yorkshire. BR Class 25 D7628 built by Beyer Peacock in Manchester in 1965 and named Sybilla in preservation is the locomotive in the photograph seen here on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

A black and white image of a pair of Southern Railways locomotives double heading in the rain near Goathland on the North Yorkshire Moors in England. The locomotives are Schools class 926 Repton and S15 Class 825. The day had started out dry, however when this train came passed it was raining cats and dogs! I believe that the rain adds to the atmosphere of this nostalgic image.
