In an old fashioned apothecary, many medicines were made on the premises and they would therefore have a stockroom with bottles of basic ingredients.

The neighborhood drugstore became a cornerstone of small-town America where customers bought pills, ointments, and preparations and paid for them at this vintage brass-plated cash register, both a beautiful and practical addition to this pharmacy.

Longs Drugs is an American chain with approximately 70 drugstores throughout the state of Hawaii and formerly in the Continental US. Before being acquired by CVS Health in 2008, it was a chain of over 500 stores, located primarily on the West Coast of the United States. Besides Hawaii, it had stores located in California, Nevada, Arizona, Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, Utah and Washington, and was headquartered in Walnut Creek, California.

Mortar and pestle were used daily in the drug store when preparing prescriptions. Several types and sizes were often needed. The metal mortar and pestle fell out of use beginning in the early 20th century, due to its weight and difficulties preventing rust and corrosion.

The mortar and pestle were very important in the early pharmacy because it was used to grind medicine. They came in various sizes as can be seen by the large pestle in this image.

The MUSTEROLE CO., manufacturer of a famous over-the-counter ointment, began in 1905 after pharmacist A. L. McLaren developed a mustard ointment at his Cedar and E. 97th St. drugstore. As the ointment's popularity grew, McLaren was unable to maintain his supply and eventually restricted its sale to regular customers. The mustard preparation's success convinced George Miller, owner of a nearby hardware store, to sell his store and invest in an expanded production and packaging facility for the product. After Miller and McLaren mobilized additional investors, the Musterole Co. was incorporated in 1907. The company soon moved to 4612 St. Clair and then to 1748 E. 27th St. The medication, known as Musterole, was used to relieve chest congestion

Pay 'n Save was a retail company founded by Monte Lafayette Bean in Seattle, Washington, in 1940. Over the years, Pay 'n Save was the leading drugstore chain in Washington and was the owner of several Washington-based retailers, including Lamonts and Ernst.

K&B (Katz & Besthoff) - K and B Dept Store

The Kansas City Katz were an amateur team in the Ban Johnson League sponsored by the Katz Drugstore, a beloved chain in the Kansas City region during the first half of the 20th century. The Ban Johnson league was an amateur organization for youths under 21. Named for the late Bancroft Johnson, who for many years was president of the American League, the Ban Johnson movement began in Kansas City, Mo., in 1928, when the Kansas City Junior League was renamed in Mr. Johnson's honor.

Aki’s Apothecary is a bit of a mystery; it never seems to be where it was before, no one can remember directions to it, and you won’t find it via Google Maps. But if you’re in need of healing, just whisper what ails you 3 times in the morning while drinking a cup of tea, and by sundown you will inexplicably find yourself drawn down a curious alleyway (strange, this path wasn’t always here, was it?) and into a shop flooded with light and the scent of lavender
