In the '60s, chromed factory steel wheels had taken the shows and streets by storm. Fat-fendered radical customs with their chopped tops, sectioned bodies and other extensive modifications were falling out of favor, with radically painted late model cars now dominating the world of customs. It was around this time that several manufacturers saw that an affordably priced custom wheel was something that the hot rod and custom world desperately needed. Gardenia, California's Astro Custom Wheels was one of the many builders who threw their hat into the ring, making wheels that were equal parts show and go, so you could cruise the boulevard on Friday night, but tear up the quarter mile on Saturday morning.

Plymouth’s boxy Belvedere GTX may have been late to the party in '67, but the division cleaned house on everybody else in '68 with the Road Runner. Unlike the GTX, this time Plymouth got it right; dropping in a 335 bhp 383 cid V-8 with 440 Super Commando heads and cam in a bare bones 3,000-lb, two-door hardtop with a 4-speed synchro transmission. Base price was $2,870.00, skinned down to a rubber floor mat and non-pleat taxicab interior. If you wanted carpet and bright work, you had to drop another $79.20 for the décor group. More power by way of a 425 bhp, 426 cid Hemi would cost you $714.30, but the base car was quick and simple, and that's exactly how most buyers liked it.

C&T Automotive was started in 1951 in Sherman Oaks, California by Don Clark and Clem Tebo, hence the C and the T in the name. While they did a little bit of everything as far as making parts for racing engines, turning out competition grade stroker crankshafts was their bread and butter. Whether you were drag racing, burning up the dirt oval, or swapping paint on the stock car circuit, there was a good stretch there when it was safe to say that the fastest guys were running C&T crankshafts.

Founded in 1925, Mallory initially developed OEM ignition systems for many early cars, but by the '50s, they were known for their aftermarket systems for hot rods and drag racers who needed more oomph to get their high-compression engines to light and for those needing more adjustability for fine-tuning and keeping their monster motors humming along.
