This is a view of the River Swale just below the Falls at Richmond. North Yorkshire. In winter the river is a torrent, but in summer it drops to a gentle flow, exposing it's rocky bed and inviting paddlers to dip in. This was painted from my own photograph.

The Australian Shepherd is not named because it's an Australian dog, but because it herds Australian sheep! This smart, highly trainable, worker was bred in California USA and has quickly grown to become one of the most popular breeds for ranchers, teaching tricks, and keeping as pets.

The Irish Setter is a hunting dog but also a loving and adorable family dog. Over 200 years old, the Irish Setter was originally bred as a bird dog. Their keen sense of smell and lean swift body made them perfect for hunting in the time of nets and falconry. They were one of the first nine breeds inducted into the American Kennel Club when it was founded in 1884. Their lovable personalities lead them to make friends easily, and owners often say they are big kids at heart.

Their keen sense of smell and lean swift body made them perfect for hunting in the time of nets and falconry. Their lovable personalities lead them to make friends easily, and owners often say they are big kids at heart.

The Wetterhoun is a Dutch dog originally used for hunting in the Netherlands. It is a medium sized dog with a curly coat. It's considered a rare breed worldwide although it hails from an ancient lineage of native Frisian dogs, nomad dogs, and possibly a now-extinct Old Water Dog. It's also known as the Otterhoun even though it's not an Otterhound and a Dutch Spaniel even though it's not a spaniel.

Alaskan Malamutes are sledge dogs, not sled dogs which is a semantic way of saying they can pull larger and heavier loads – up to 3,000 pounds! Also known as the Mal or Mally, the Malamute first emerged in the 1900s when gold prospectors came north to the Yukon and bred their dogs with local Alaskan breeds.

The American Hairless Terrier is a naturally hairless breed. They are closely related to the Rat Terrier and resemble them in all ways except baldness. They are friendly and playful and easy to train. AHT puppies are actually born with a fuzzy coat. They shed this fuzz within six weeks of birth and are forever hairless afterward except their eyebrows and whiskers. Unlike other dogs, they will break out in a sweat if they are hot or afraid.

The word Papillon means "butterfly" in French, which you may understand when you see this dog's large winglike ears. Also known as the Continental Toy Spaniel, it is one of the oldest small dogs on record although the butterfly-eared variety didn't appear until the 16th century. Before then, the dog primarily had drop-ears, a version of the dog that still exists today and goes by the name Phalene... Moth!

Siberian Huskies are sled dogs from the icy northern reaches. They are of the spitz family, bred by the Chukchi people of Siberia. They were introduced to Nome Alaska during the gold rush where they were bred with local dogs to create the Alaskan Husky. Nowadays, Siberian Huskies are mostly bred for house pets, but still pull sleds competitively.

They closely resemble the old English Bull Terriers contemporary to that time, and you can see the resemblance to modern-day Bull Terriers, Bull Dogs, and Staffordshire Terriers in their strong features and stocky build. They’re fiercely loyal and suspicious of strangers, so not recommended for households unless they are well trained by an owner as dedicated and attentive to the Gull as the Gull is to them.

The Belgian Malinios are incredibly athletic with a tremendous bite strength and intelligence. For this reason they are often used as police and active service dogs. They also make good pets, but be mindful of their smarts!

Pomeranians or Poms are a toy dog of the Spitz family popular as companions throughout Europe and the western world. Queen Victoria had a Pomeranian famous for its tiny size and throughout her reign the breed standard decreased by half. They have a thick ruff at their throats and are known for their floofy top coat that turns these little friends into big ole walkin' puffballs.
