The most famous of them being Lagertha. According to the legend, Lagertha was a Norwegian Viking shieldmaiden who married the famous Norse chieftain Ragnar Lothbrok. Vegvisir translates into “That Which Shows the Way” in Icelandic. In the Huld Manuscript, it says this about the Vegvisir: “If this sign is carried, one will never lose one’s way in storms or bad weather, even when the way is not known.”

The Valkyrie were the shield maidens of Viking god Odin in Norse mythology. In pagan belief they haunted the field of battle, choosing from the dead, those that would fight for Odin, and who for a time, would feast and fight in Valhalla.

Jomsborg is seen as a place of safety for pagan Vikings who are fleeing the Christian Vikings in Norway.
