Surf Beach, near Lompoc in Santa Barbara County, has waves suitable for beginners - except for those sharks. This beach break features both right and left waves over a sandy bottom. Despite its fairly good waves, Surf Beach has witnessed two fatal shark attacks in the last three years. The area surrounding Surf Beach boasts beautiful dunes, coastal flora, and abundant wildlife. Accessible from the Amtrak parking area, the beach is part of Vandenberg State Marine Reserve. The areas north and south are closed seasonally to protect Snowy Plover bird nesting spots.
