American Bison Woolaroc Oklahoma by Debra Martz Shortly, after entering the Woolaroc Preserve, we came upon a herd of American Bison lazing on the grounds near the road. The Bison were first introduced into Woolaroc in 1926 when a herd of 90 of the animals were brought here from South Dakota. At that time, they were commonly called buffalo. In 1925 oilman Frank Phillips built a ranch retreat, Woolaroc, on 3,700 acres in the Osage Hills in northern Oklahoma.
