He was created by director Paul Smith for the Walter Lantz studio in 1953, and developed further by Tex Avery in the two subsequent films following Smith's debut entry. The character soon became the second most popular Lantz/Universal character, behind Woody Woodpecker.

Buzz Buzzard is an anthropomorphic vulture and scammer making efforts to scam Woody Woodpecker with so many ways to eliminate Woody of money or food. In other appearances, Buzz has been a cowboy, a carnival barker, and a soda jerk yet he still remained a royal pain to Woody.

A pink puma known as "Snaggletooth", featuring the eventual character's general manner and Bert Lahr–inspired voice but without collar or cuffs, first appeared on television in The Quick Draw McGraw Show in 1959. The character subsequently appeared in a supporting role in Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy and Snooper and Blabber. Under the revised name Snagglepuss the character appeared in his own series of shorts in 1961 as a regular segment on The Yogi Bear Show, featuring in 32 episodes. He later appeared in other Hanna-Barbera shows, including Yogi's Gang (1973), as a co-host in Laff-A-Lympics (1977–78), Yogi's Treasure Hunt (1985), and as a teenager in Yo Yogi! (1991).

Inspector Willoughby was a classic Walter Lantz cartoon about a diminutive secret agent (Agent 6 7/8) who always gets the job done. It aired in the late 50’s and early 60’s.
