Wyoming. There stands Devils Tower with its foreboding facade. An enigma to some such as Roy and Gail – two people inexplicably drawn to the landmark. What Roy doesn’t know, however, is that Devils Tower is an intergalactic airport, and he’s about to take a first-class trip to the outer reaches of the universe. Well, actually, no one really knows where exactly he is travelling to, but it appears he’ll be gone for some time. Too bad he forgot to pack his toothbrush (…or maybe, where he is going, there is no need to brush teeth…?).

It was formed by the cooling of a plug of underground magma (molten rock) produced by a volcano around 60 million years ago. Erosion of the softer surrounding soil and rock over the centuries slowly exposed the hard rock, causing it to project above the surface.

Devils Tower - Scenic Back Roads by Debra Martz ........................... Most people drive to Devil's Tower in Wyoming via highway 14 and yes, we did that, too! But there is always something fresh and different when you find the back roads. So, after the crowded, weekend visit, we decided to return to Devil's Tower on a week day while still visiting this part of Wyoming. Just west of Sundance, WY there's a paved back road 838 that goes north about 6-7 miles. When the pavement stops you find yourself at a Y in the road, both of which are forest service roads. Veer to the left and you will find yourself on forest rd 847. You enter and exit the borders of the Black Hills National Forest, passing by a few farms along the way and then....

After finishing that trail we noticed another 3 mile trail, Red Beds Trail, that started from the same place and opted to see what different views it offered. It seems very few take this trail as we only saw 3 individuals along the way. It starts by taking through a Ponderosa pine forest that eventually gives way to meadow and a series of very mild switchbacks leading you down and away from the tower. Further along the trail you completely lose sight of the tower. Soon the meadow grasses suddenly give way to a barren landscape of red clay and sand. The trail loops around these red...
