Founded in 1927, Ben Franklin was a chain of five and dime stores found primarily in small towns throughout the United States. The stores were franchise based, with individual stores owned by independent proprietors, and are believed to be the first retail franchise. They are named after Benjamin Franklin, taking a cue in their merchandise offerings from Franklin's saying, "a penny saved is a penny earned."

Pants Galore was a popular chain of dollar store-style clothing outlets located throughout the Michigan area. They were known for their radio commercial pants jingles and by most locals simply as the '$5 Pants Store.' Their 'I'm No Dummy' campaign ran in 1975 and included giveaways with the ad art printed on t-shirts, buttons, and can koozies. You've got pants!

Caldor was a discount department store chain founded in 1951 by husband and wife Carl and Dorothy Bennett, hence the name, Cal-Dor. Referred to by many as an upscale discounter, Caldor grew from a second story “Walk-Up-&-Save” operation in Port Chester, New York, into a regional retailing giant. Its stores were earning over $1 billion in sales by the time Mr. Bennett retired in 1985, by which time Caldor was a subsidiary of Associated Dry Goods. Despite its successes, Caldor suffered from financial issues by the ’90s, and the company was liquidated, with all 145 stores closing by May 1999.

Fisher's Big Wheel was primarily located in smaller towns which were not already served by other discount retailers. At its peak, the chain comprised more than 100 stores in 8 states. The chain declared bankruptcy in 1993, selling some stores and closing others. Fisher's Big Wheel closed in 1994.

Compare… you can’t do better than Zayre! Zayre was a chain of discount stores that operated in the eastern half of the US from 1956 to 1990. All Zayre stores had been closed or converted by the 1990's, and what had once been America’s fifth largest retailer was no more.

FedMart was a chain of discount department stores started by Sol Price, who later founded Price Club. It was originally a discount department store open to government employees, who paid a membership fee of just $2 per family. FedMart's first location in San Diego, California was in a converted airport hangar and the store's first year was highly successful, exceeding all expectations. Over the next 20 years, FedMart grew to include 45 stores in a chain that generated more than $300 million in annual sales and expanded to several states in the Southwest United States with many locations being previous White Front or Two Guys stores. Price later sold two-thirds of the chain to Hugo Mann, a German retail chain, and in 1975 and was forced out.

Two Guys was a staple on the East Coast. They had a great toy selection and how many Christmas trees found toys under it from Two Guys!

Filene's opened its famous "Automatic Bargain Basement" in 1909, which became a much-visited tourist attraction. Goods were marked down according to an automatic schedule; an item that had been on sale for 12 days was marked down by 25 percent, after 18 days by 50 percent, after 24 days by 75 percent, and after 30 days it was given away. Famous for the Running of the Brides which was a one-day sale of wedding gowns, garnering local media attention because of the sight of hundreds of brides-to-be scrambling for bargains. The store stocked thousands of gowns for that day and marked them down drastically; gowns were non-returnable. Prices ranged from $249.00 to $699.00, marked down from retail prices as high as $9,000.

Price Club was a warehouse store chain, founded by Sol Price in San Diego, California. Price devised the Price Club concept in 1975 after being forced out of FedMart, another retail chain he founded. Price and a few of his friends put up $2.5 million in capital to open the first Price Club on July 12, 1976 in San Diego. Price Club would eventually merge with one of its competitors and the combined company would go on to become the global leader in the wholesale shopping club space with more than 800 warehouses worldwide as of 2021.

Before The Paper Store, Party City, and similar establishments, there was Paperama. This New England paper & crafts discount store started from a small discount store in Hingham, MA during 1971, before growing into the multi-location Paperama brand we came to love. By the early 1990's, financial burdens led to an eventual bankruptcy filing, and the end of a party/paper store institution in New England.
