A pretty thatched cottage in the village of Sulham in Berkshire, England. The village lies at the foot of steeply wooded Sulham Hill and is situated just to the south of Pangbourne. Several of the cottages here are in this somewhat whimsical 'ornamental cottage' style, having been built in the mid 1800s by the local landowners, the Wilder family, who lived in nearby Sulham House. An artist creating a watercolour of the scene through the canal bridge at Pewsey Wharf in Wiltshire. Here the Kennet and Avon Canal passes through on its journey between the Thames at Reading and the Bristol Channel. It incorporates parts of both the Rivers Kennet and Avon in parts known as 'navigations'. The canal was constructed between 1724 and 1810 and was a commercial waterway until the coming of the Great Western Railway. It was restored in the mid 1900s and was finally reopened in 1990. Looking across the River Thames from the Thames Path in Buckinghamshire to the parish church of All Saints at Bisham in Berkshire. The church dates from the 12th century, the squat Norman tower being built around 1175. The buildings were extended over the following years, particularly by the Hoby family who lived in nearby Bisham Abbey. Just a short distance downstream is the riverside town of Marlow with its iconic suspension bridge. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

A pair of swans at Greenham Lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal near Newbury, Berkshire. This section of the canal - or navigation (combined river and canal) began its construction in 1718 under the supervision of engineer John Hore of Newbury and in 1724 the stretch between Reading and Newbury was opened. The entire canal joining the Avon Navigation from Bristol and the Kennet Navigation in Berkshire was completed in 1810 allowing goods to be transported smoothly from Bristol to London. A scene captured in the village of Bosham (pronounced 'Bozzum') in West Sussex. Here the river flows between old houses to meet the sea by the quay. This image has been given a textured, pencil drawing finish. Bosham has its roots in history. King Canute is reputed to have had a palace near here and it might have been at Bosham that he commnded the sea to go back. It also appears on the Bayeux Tapestry showing the meeting of Harold Godwinson and Edward the Confessor prior to a meeting with William of Normandy.The upshot of this was, of course, the Battle of Hastings and the Norman conquest of Britain. The remainder of the length to Bristol was completed between 1794 and 1810. The canal fell into disuse due to the coming of the railway but was restored and fully reopened in 1990.

A digital art image of The Thames Path at Reading Bridge connecting the town of Reading in Berkshire with Caversham on the north bank of the River Thames. Originally there was just one bridge, Caversham Bridge, just further upstream but as the main town absorbed the village of Caversham in the early 1900s, a new bridge was deemed necessary and this structure was finally opened in 1923.

It's late afternoon at the River Deben quayside at Woodbridge, Suffolk and the low sun is lighting the scene and casting lengthening shadows. Woodbridge sits on the tidal stretch of the Deben just before it flows into the North Sea at Felixtowe. The town was once known for its shipbuilding and rope making - and it is said that some of Sir Francis Drake's warships were built here. Now we find mostly pleasure boats moored here - and a lone gull flying in!

Looking across the moat to Caerphilly Castle (Castell Caerfili) on a bright, snowy December day. This formidable castle was built in the late 13th century by Gilbert de Clare in order to secure this part of Wales from being taken over by the Welsh leader Llewellyn ap Gruffudd, Begun in 1268, it is the largest castle in ground area in Wales and the second largest castle in Britain!

The River Thames at Pangbourne. This is the scene just below the weir before it flows under the toll bridge at Whitchurch and on past Pangbourne Meadows. There has been a toll bridge here since 1792, the original being wooden. The present iron bridge was constructed in 1902 and has recently been refurbished. This image was captured on a bright afternoon in early February when the Thames was high and flowing fast.

The south side of St Laurence's church in the village of Tidmarsh, Berkshire, England. This lovely old C12th church has a superbly decorated Norman doorway within the porch; a Norman font, C13th lancet windows - two with the remains of medieval wall paintings and some rare floor tiles. The wooden bell cote is supported inside by sturdy oak beams intricately carved - apparently by the wife of a vicar in the C19th. A path by the church leads to the River Pang flowing to join the Thames at Pangbourne.

A narrowboat heads upstream on the Kennet and Avon canal near Woolhampton in Berkshire, England. This image was captured on an autumn afternoon with the trees lining the banks turning to gold. The Kennet and Avon Canal, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Kennet and Avon rivers and thus provide a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading. It fell into disuse due to the Great Western Railway but was completely restored and reopened in 1990.

A digital rendering of a photograph of a statue of King Robert The Bruce in front of Marischal College in Aberdeen, Scotland. Built in the early twentieth century, the Edwardian style Marischal College is an impressive granite building (the second largest granite building in the world) owned by the University of Aberdeen. The college was founded in the 16th century. It now houses the Marischal Museum and is leased to Aberdeen City Council as its Headquarters. Aberdeen is known as "The Granite City" because of its many fine granite buildings. The statue of Scotland's hero king was unveiled in 2011.
