The parish church of St Lawrence at Hungerford in Berkshire, England. The church is just to the west of the town next to the swing bridge crossing the Kennet and Avon Canal. It was totally rebuilt in 1814 in the Regency Gothic Revival style using Bath Stone which was transported along the canal. Further refurbishment then took place in the mid 1800s. The canal itself was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the cities of Bristol and London, joining the Thames at Reading,

A small snapshot of life on the seafront....although most of our cities seem to have the obligatory big wheel these days.

This very elegant town hall sits in the centre of the town of Abingdon-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, England. The town was once in Berkshire and until 1867 was the County Town. The town hall, now a Grade 1 listed building was constructed between 1678 and 1682. It was designed to house the county courtroom above a sheltered market space. Both the master mason, Christopher Kempster and the clerk of works, John Scarborough were associates of Sir Christopher Wren whose influence can be seen. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The quay at Woodbridge in Suffolk at low tide. The many masts show that the main activity here is sailing! Woodbridge sits on the tidal stretch of the River Deben just before it flows into the North Sea at Felixtowe. The town was once known for its shipbuilding and rope making - and it is said that some of Sir Francis Drake's warships were built here. In the background is the iconic Tide Mill which harnesses the power of the tides to turn its wheel. The image has a textured finish.

The parish church of Holy Cross at Shipton on Cherwell in Oxfordshire, England. The present church was built in 1831 after the previous building had been demolished. However, there has been a church here since the C12th - and a Saxon font gives a hint to a longer history. Originally named Holy Cross, in the C18th it was changed to St Mary and then to St Jerome before reverting to its original name. Shipton is in the Cherwell valley, the canal arriving in 1788, passing closely by the churchyard. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

To the right can be seen the point at which the River Cocker joins the Derwent - hence the name 'Cockermouth'. Also in this view are the Jennings Brewery buildings which have been on this site since 1874. The River Dewent itself rises near Scafell Pike at Sprinkling Tarn and then flows through Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake before flowing through Cockermouth and thence to the Irish Sea at Workington. A boat on the Mill Avon River at Tewkwsbury, Gloucestershire passing under Quay Bridge. This is a cast iron and sandstone structure dating from 1822 and is now Grade 2 listed. The Mill Avon dates way back to the C12th when Benedictine monks from nearby Tewkesbury Abbey diverted the course of the River Avon to turn the wheel of its water mill. Following the direction the boat is heading, the Avon is navigable all the way to Shakespeare's Stratford where it joins the Stratford on Avon Canal. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The view looking upriver from Quay Street Bridge in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. This is the town where the River Severn joins with Shakespeare's Avon just a little further downstream. Just to the left of the poicture is the Severn-Avon Lock allowing boats to pass from one river to the other. Further upriver can be seen King John's Bridge, a Grade 2 listed structure - and apparently if a boat can pass through this then it can manage all other bridges as far as Stratford Upon Avon! A selection of canal boats moored for the winter just above the lock at Aldermaston on the Kennet and Avon. This image was captured on a fine afternoon in early February just before the sun went down. The Kennet and Avon Canal, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Kennet and Avon rivers and thus provide a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading and the Thames. It fell into disuse due to the switch to rail transport and the rise of the Great Western Railway which runs alongside the canal here. It was, however, completely restored from the mid-1900s and the full length fully reopened in 1990. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The valve tower next to the dam at the Pontsticill Reservoir in Powis, South Wales. Also known as the Taf Fechan Reservoir it is situated on the south side of the Brecon Beacons National Park and is within the Fforest Fawr Geopark. This gothic - styled valve house sits next to the dam and is adjacent to the bell-mouthed spillway. The lake is 2.5 miles long and covers 102 hectares - approximately 252 acres. A path leads round its shores and on the eastern side runs the Brecon Mountain Railway

The wharf at Hungerford in West Berkshire, England. The Kennet and Avon Canal flows through Hungerford on its way to Newbury in the east and Marlborough in the west. Now peaceful and picturesque, in the mid 1800s, the wharf was a hive of activity with boats loading and unloading at the many industrial buildings then lining its banks. Hungerford is a small market town on the River Dun which joins the Kennet and the canal just to the east. Its wide high street is famous for antique shopping.

Looking south across the River Thames from the Buckinghamshire bank to the parish church of All Saints at Bisham in Berkshire, England. The church dates from the 12th century, the squat Norman tower being built around 1175. The buildings were extended over the following years, particularly by the Hoby family who lived in nearby Bisham Abbey. Walking along the Thames Path between Marlow and Henley on Thames, the buildings of both the church and abbey can be seen only a short distance from Marlow.

Reading Bridge, a concrete single-span bridge connecting the town of Reading in Berkshire, England, with Caversham on the north bank of the River Thames. Originally there was just one bridge, Caversham Bridge, just further upstream, crossing the Thames at Reading but as the main town absorbed the village of Caversham in the early 1900s, a new bridge was deemed necessary and this structure was finally opened in 1923.
