Spiral galaxy UGC 2885, NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. UGC 2885 is located in the constellation Perseus about 230 million light-years from Earth. There is a bright central region and spiral arms, which have a blue colour due to the formation of hot, young stars. Also shown are two bright foreground stars. UGC 2885 is known as the Godzilla Galaxy because of it's large size, two and half times wider than the Milky Way and containing ten times as many stars.

Reflection nebula. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of the reflection nebula IC 349. This nebula (also known as Barnard's Merope Nebula) shines as it reflects the light of the nearby star Merope (23 Tauri), which is out of frame at upper right. The nebula is composed mainly of small dust particles. IC 349 is so close to Merope that the star's light and solar wind pushes the dust away from it, a phenomenon known as radiation pressure. This affects smaller dust particles more than larger ones. The spikes seen pointing towards upper right comprise larger particles which have not been blown backwards as much as others.

Sirius binary star system, Hubble Space Telescope image. Sirius A (centre, Alpha Canis Majoris), in the constellation Canis Major, is the brightest star in the night sky and only 8.6 light years from Earth. It has a very small, faint companion, Sirius B (small dot at lower left). Sirius B, only 12,000 kilometres in diameter, is a white dwarf star, the collapsed core of a star. Normally, the companion star would be obscured by the brightness of its companion, but Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 instrument was used to locate the star, and other instruments were then used to measure the gravitational redshift of its light, and hence its mass. Sirius B has a mass 98% of that of our Sun. The results were published in December 2005.

Starbirth region LH 95, Hubble Space Telescope image. Large stars within LH 95 generate strong stellar winds and high levels of ultraviolet radiation. This heats the interstellar gas, creating the blue glow seen here. The dark lanes of dust (left and lower centre) are areas that have survived the effects of the stellar winds. Due to the filters used, the hot, bright stars in this image are blue, and cooler stars appear red in colour. LH 95 is in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), some 176,000 light years from Earth in the constellations Mensa and Dorado. Starbirth region NGC 602, Hubble Space Telescope image. A cluster of bright, newly formed stars (blue) are blowing a cavity in the centre of a nebula (gas and dust), which is glowing under the impact of the stellar radiation. This starbirth region is 196,000 light years from Earth, in the Small Magellanic Cloud, in the constellation Tucana. This image was obtained with Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys instrument. The results were published in January 2007.

Hubble Telescope servicing. Astronauts perform an extravehicular activity (EVA or spacewalk) during a space shuttle mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Hubble's solar arrays can be clearly seen at centre left & right. Astronauts Steven Smith and John Grunsfeld are replacing the gyroscopes which control HST's pointing mechanism. The astronauts are strapped to the shuttle's robo- tic arm, known as the remote manipulator system (RMS). This image was taken from the Discovery shuttle's cargo bay during mission STS-103 (19-27 December 1999). Replacing the HST's computer was also part of the servicing. This mission was the 3rd to service the HST since its launch in 1990.

This image was obtained by the Chandra X-ray Observatory (blue), Hubble Space Telescope (visible light, green), the Spitzer Space Telescope (infrared, pink), and the Galaxy Evolution Explorer Orbiter(GALEX, ultraviolet, purple).

Ultra Deep Field galaxies. Hubble Space Telescope Ultra Deep Field, the deepest view ever taken of the universe in 2004. Each dot of light is a separate galaxy. Some of these are amongst the most distant objects ever seen, over 13 billion light years away, and thus over 13 billion years old. To detect these extremely faint galaxies, the HST focused its ACS and NICMOS cameras on an apparently empty patch of sky for one million seconds. The infrared NICMOS data shows galaxies at a redshift of up to 12, which were among the first objects to form in the universe after its birth 13.7 billion years ago.

Cheshire Cat galaxy group. Composite image of a group of galaxies known as the Cheshire Cat group. The arc features are distant galaxies, whose light has been stretched and bent by gravitational lensing. The left eye of the group contains an active supermassive black hole at the centre of the galaxy. Each eye galaxy is the brightest member of its own group of galaxies and these two groups are moving towards each other at over 300,000 miles per hour. It is thought that the Cheshire Cat will eventually become what is known as a fossil group, with one giant elliptical galaxy and other much smaller, fainter ones.
