Geisha, also known as geiko (in Kyoto and Kanazawa) or geigi are a class of female Japanese performance artists and entertainers trained in traditional Japanese performing arts styles, such as dance, music and singing, as well as being proficient conversationalists and hosts.

kitsune mask

These masks depict the angry, red-faced demons of Japanese folklore, and are said to subdue and scare away evil spirits. They can also be worn as a protective talisman.

Mythology has always been a big interest to me, particularly Japanese mythology. The stories and creatures surrounding the subject never cease to capture my imagination. Here we have the Yamata no Orochi, or 8-Headed Serpent. The tribal dragon is something I designed as a tattoo, while the kanji surrounding the beast represents Orochi's eight different heads, which has a different element. Starting at the top, going clockwise, the kanji translates to: Light, Water, Wind, Thunder, Darkness, Poison, Earth and Fire.

The last two illustrations in this series (grape and pomegranate) were very ancient-greeky so I wanted to do something more international and with more pop-culture associations, so I picked: Orange! In the far east, the orange is a symbol of the sun. They are a symbol of good luck and fertility. The orange is rare among trees for its ability to have both flowers and fruit on a branch at once, leading to associations with both virginity and fertility combined; to this end, it is a traditional symbol of brides in China. I chose a qipao dress for this orangey bride, though I did add a big slit up the side so she could get her leg out for more tattoos. There’s so many orange references in this pic, I thought I’d just straight up ...
