East Pasadena is a small, unincorporated community to the east of Pasadena -- which is slowly nibbling away at its edges. The Island of Antaria is a land full of adventure, magic, danger and limitless possibility.

Back in 2014, I explored the Northeast Los Angeles neighborhood of Glassell Park. I made this map with ink and oil paint; and included it in a piece for my series, "California Fool's Gold." https://ericbrightwell.com/2014/08/05/breadbaskets-and-head-gaskets-exploring-glassell-park/

Bunker Hill is a neighborhood in Downtown Los Angeles. Originally, it was a posh neighborhood for white Angelenos. By the mid-20th century, most of the mansions were subdivided and home to a diverse, working-class population. Most were demolished in the name of "slum clearance" and today it is topped by high culture amenities and gleaming (if anonymous) skyscrapers. Angeles Forest, in the forest sense, is a wilderness area that extends from Los Angeles into neighboring counties. It's also, in the sense here, a sparsely-populated region of Los Angeles County. I drew this map of Asian American-dominated suburbs of the San Gabriel Valley in the style of 18th Century Chinese Cartographer, Mo Yi Tong. This antique planisphere features constellations in the southern night sky including some signs of the zodiac and other creatures and figures in mythology. The Sun and Mercury are in the upper left. The Moon and Venus are in the upper right. The lower right shows Mars, Jupiter and Saturn (including the moons). A solar eclipse is in the lower left. In Greek mythology, Auriga is often identified as the mythological Greek hero Erichthonius of Athens, the chthonic son of Hephaestus who was raised by the goddess Athena. Vintage illustration astronomy and antique celestial star chart map of the stars in the constellation Orion. Orion (a hunter in Greek mythology) is a prominent constellation located on the celestial equator and visible throughout the world. It is one of the largest, most conspicuous, and most recognizable constellations in the night sky. Here Orion can be seen holding a club and the skin and head of a lion.

Bootes means, herdsman, plowman or ox driver. Canes Venatici means 'hunting dogs' and they belong to Boötes. Coma Berenices means 'Berenice's Hair' and refers to Queen Berenice II of Egypt, who sacrificed her long hair as a votive offering. Quadrans Muralis is a navigational tool used to calculate various readings, such as longitude, latitude, and time of day.
