From the series “Please do not kill butterflies”, pins, oil and pencil on paper, original size: 26 x 18 cm. Please, all these dead animals ... Of course, not everyone of us can or want become vegetarian. Sure, in some cases, maybe, the medical experimentation needs them to get results. But we really have to kill them for our frivolous activities? ... Is it necessary to have so many pink pigs die in front of a camera? Do we really need to dissect sharks in formaldehyde, to starve stray dogs tied to a chain in the corner of a gallery, or to make innocent ants go crazy in twisted tubes of plexiglass? To make these drawings, no butterfly was killed.

I was at the Brazos Summit in the San Juan Mountain range of northern New Mexico taking in the expansive views when my eyes moved to all the wildflowers. I walked over to get some close up shots of the flowers when I spotted this black and white moth. The first IDs generated by Google were that of a "Wild Forget-Me-Not Moth" but the range was wrong. I’ve always loved death’s head moths, so I wanted to draw one in my own colorful but spooky style.

This fuzzy yellow caterpillar is a Banded Tussock Moth caterpillar. They are very cute and charming, and live in North America. They are covered with fluffy yellow fur, and have long black and white tufts that stick out around each end.

A Hairstreak Butterfly that I took a photo of at a nature trail in Statesboro Georgia. I am 95% certain it is a Juniper Hairstreak that has had most of the more vibrant green scales on it's wings flake off. Originally I thought it was a moth given its more drab color and hairy and thicker body. As with most of my works I grant the right to display.
