Simulated detection of Higgs boson. Computer simulation of an event in which the decay of a Higgs boson produces four muons (white tracks). The muons, along with countless other particles (yellow tracks and red dots), are produced in a head-on collision between two protons. The Higgs boson is a localised clustering in the Higgs field that permeates space; local distortions of the field are thought to be the way that particles gain mass. This image shows how the Higgs boson might be seen in the CMS detector on the Large Hadron Collider, which is due to start operation at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory outside Geneva, in 2007-2009.

The discovery photograph of the positron, the positive version of the electron & the first antimatter particle to be discovered. The cloud chamber photo was taken in 1932 by US physicist Carl Anderson. It shows the track of a positive particle that enters the chamber from below. The particle is known to be positive because of the way it bends in the chamber's magnetic field; & it is proved to be moving up the picture because it loses energy & curves more in the magnetic field after traversing the 6 mm thick lead plate in the middle. But the track is too faint to be caused by a proton; it was exactly like an electron's track; it had to be the predicted positron.

The 2DEG possesses an electric potential. Irregularities in this potential produce a 'bumpy' surface. The model shows the paths taken by electrons released one at a time into the gas. The negatively-charged electrons were deflected by the bumps in the gas, producing a branching pattern, with the greatest density of electrons represented by the darkest areas. Quasicrystal. Computer model of a quasicrystal generated by the addition of nine equally-spaced particles behaving like waves (showing wave- particle duality). The waves met at the centre of the yellow "sun", producing a quasicrystal. Within the sun the pattern approximates to a mathematical Bessel function; there is regular repetition, concentric circles forming about the centre. As the pattern moves outwards from the sun, this order is lost, with similar structures appearing at irregular intervals. The yellow "slice" is one repeating unit of the pattern. The quasicrystal was modelled by Professor Eric Heller, Harvard University, USA.
