When tattoos came to mind,before the modern tattooing trend,we would often picture criminals,bikers and rebels. The first Spaniards to arrive in the Philippines,however,saw them quite differently when they were ultimately defeated by fierce,noble warriors from the Visayas,covered in complex tattoo designs all over their body. That day,these painted people or “Pintados” as called by conquistadors cemented their mark in the diverse history of the Philippines. The tattoos that these warriors possessed were not just meant for decorative purposes. The tattoos of the Pintados project an aura of intimidation and fear towards their enemies,which was a part of their psychological strategy during tribal war and raids.

Jose Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda (June 19, 1861-Dec 30, 1896) was a Filipino Nationalist,writer and Polymath active at the end of the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. He is considered the National hero (Pambansang Bayani) of the Philippines.

'Ambot',is not a tagalog but a Cebuano/Visayan word. It means "i don't know" in English. It could also have the same meaning/intent when someone says "who knows?" in English. The actual Tagalog/Filipino equavalent is "aywan",which is more commonly spelled "ewan" nowadays.

Padayon is a word that comes from the language called “Hiligaynon”. This particular language could be found in some areas of the Visayas such as iloilo and Negros Occidental. The word means “to continue”,however,this single word means so much more. When people are in tough place in life,struggling and facing tremendous pressures,often times you’ll here them chant a mantra -”Padayon”. As such, this simple words becomes a beacon of hope that says I’ll push through any challenge life gives me”.
