Portrait Watercolour Pins and Buttons

If you want colour, here is some colour. A loose and impressionistic portrait of Bo, the dogue de Bordeax or French mastiff. Using watercolour and ink over a charcoal sketch, I chose a pose to work from taken at an angle from below his eye line which helps give an indication of his size. I've used every colour in the book apart from his natural colouring, the splashes and runs of paint give an impression of movement as if he is shaking his giant head.

I have always wanted to see one of these magnificent birds close up. On a recent visit to the bird sanctuary, Balsa del Sapo, near El Ejido, Almeria, Spain, I saw this pair and had to paint them. I started a pastel drawing but decided watercolour was the best medium for the birds. The female is the larger bird on the right. Balsa del Sapo, an oasis in the plastic desert behind the coast, is well worth a visit. This one was probably the most tricky piece since the dog itself has white fur. Obviously painting a white dog on white paper wouldn’t make for much to look at so to tackle this I painted an under painting of yellows and purples over the dog firstly, giving me a tone I could work with that shows through the transparent white. This also helped me with shading some areas since all I had to do was paint the highlights and leave the underpainting as shadowed areas.

The salmon-crested cockatoo (Cacatua moluccensis), also known as the Moluccan cockatoo, is a cockatoo endemic to the Seram archipelago in eastern Indonesia. At a height of up to 46–52 centimetres (1.51–1.71 ft) and weight of up to 850 grams (1.87 lb), it is among the largest of the white cockatoos. The female is larger than the male on average. It has white-pink feathers with a definite peachy glow, a slight yellow on the underwing and underside of the tail feathers and a large retractable recumbent crest which it raises when threatened, revealing hitherto concealed bright red-orange plumes to frighten potential attackers. It may also be raised in excitement or in other 'emotional' displays. Some describe the crest as "flamingo-colored"....
