Variation #2 of my series of Griffin and Maiden. The earliest references to griffins come from ancient Persia where they were used widely as statues and symbols in palaces. They also had a special place in Persian literature as guardians of light.

The dancing maenad with her tambourine, a classic image straight out of Greek mythology, or a modern-day music festival ? One can't help but wonder: is she truly communing with the divine, or just trying to impress the neighbors ? In ancient Greece, maenads were followers of Dionysus, the god of wine, ecstasy, and all things merry. They were known for their wild and frenzied rituals, dancing and singing in ecstatic revelry. And of course, no Dionysian party would be complete without a tambourine to keep the beat...

One of the most beloved wall painting of the Roman Era, Primavera di Stabiae (Flora or Primavera), is a personification of Spring. Stabiae was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. 1st Century AD. National Archaeological Museum of Naples, Italy.

A wall painting from the Villa of Diomedes, an ancient Roman villa located outside the walls of Pompeii on the Via dei Sepolcri to Herculaneum. This drawing was done when the Villa was excavated between 1771 and 1774. The original has been poorly preserved.

Phrixus and Helle, the tragic siblings of Greek mythology, doomed to a journey that makes the worst family road trips seem like a picnic. Imagine fleeing from a stepmother straight out of a Grimm fairy tale, they find themselves aboard a ram with a golden fleece. As they soar through the skies, enjoying the view from cloud nine, poor Helle suffers from a serious case of vertigo and takes a tumble into the sea, which is quite the literal interpretation of 'falling head over heels.' And Phrixus? Well, he makes it to safety in Colchis, only to be sacrificed to the gods and have his fleece stolen by a certain famous hero. Talk about a family vacation gone wrong !
