Sussex Pins and Buttons

The Royal Pavilion is a former royal residence located in Brighton, Kent, England, United Kingdom. It was built in three stages, beginning in 1787, as a seaside retreat for George, Prince of Wales, who became the Prince Regent in 1811. It is often referred to as the Brighton Pavilion. It is built in the Indo-Saracenic style prevalent in India for most of the 19th century. Canon 6D, zoom lens. (Featured in Absolute Clarity.) (Feb 2015)

To save you the trouble of reading the Duke of Netflix's book (spoiler alert!) The former prince's life sucks because he grew up knowing that he would never ne the King of England. He was doomed to be the Spare, relegated to living a life of luxury in any one of several palaces belonging to the royal family. Somehow, I just can't work up any pity for this man, even if he IS married to Meghan!

Small wonder, small it's true.

A monochrome view of Brighton's West Pier. The pier was opened in 1866 and was the first pier to be Grade 1 listed in England and wales but is now derelict. The pier closed to the public in 1975 and gradually fell in to disrepair and was ravaged by two separate fires in March & May 2003, both thought to be arson.

A digital pencil drawing from my original photograph of Holy Trinity church in the West Sussex village of Bosham near the quay. It's steeped in history, the first church being founded in c850 on the site of a Roman basilica. It was replaced in the 10th century by Holy Trinity. Significantly it's mentioned in the Bayeaux Tapestry which shows Harold Godwinson and his followers riding to the church. The daughter of King Canute is said to be buried under the nave.

Well I guess you have to live in Hastings, UK, for this to make any sense! The picture shows the UK's steepest funicular railway and fishermen's net huts.

Evening at Brighton on England's East Sussex coast and a group of young people demonstate break dancing skills in the Victorian Bandstand on the seafront promenade. The bandstand was designed by the Borough Surveyor, Philip Lockwood, and was opened in 1884. It fell into disrepair during the mid 1900s but has been restored to its former glory and was reopened in 2009. Its design mirrors the spirit of the Brighton Pavilion just down the road! A view of Eastbourne Pier in East Sussex on England's south coast in the style of a coloured pencil drawing. This extremely elegant pier was opened in 1870 although it wasn't completed until 1872. Two years later part of it was swept away in a storm so was rebuilt to move during rough weather. The distinctive dome which also houses the camera obscura was built in 1888. A disatrous fire in 2014 all but destroyed the pier but it was purchased, rebuilt and reopened, standing proudly once again.

The Pier

A retro style digital painting of the iconic art deco style De La Warr Pavillion on the seafront near my home town in the UK. There are more of these in the same style.

The sun setting over the remains of Brighton's iconic West Pier. Built in Victorian times to allow the populace to enjoy bracing fresh sea air by walking over the sea, it has suffered gradual destruction since the mid 1900s and was finally closed to the public in 1975. In 2003 a fire destroyed the main structure, the elements continuing the work leaving these skeletal remains!

The quayside at Bosham, West Sussex, lying next to the village green and the church. This image was captured just as the sky was clearing after a dull morning. The village itself has a long history, appearing in the Bayeaux Tapestry where it shows Harold Godwinson and his followers riding towards the church and, even further back when King Canute had a palace nearby. Bosham harbour is part of Chichester Harbour, an important coastal conservation area. This image has a pencil drawing effect.

The roofline of the Royal Pavilion at Brighton in Sussex. This started life as a small farmhouse which was rented by George Prince of Wales in the 1780s. He enlarged the building in 1787 and in 1815, having now become Prince Regent, he commissioned John Nash to transform it into the spectacular if not improbable building we see now on Brighton's seafront.
