White Tara is the goddess of health and longevity. She is related to a group of twenty-one Taras where each of them possessing their own virtues and wisdoms. She is also appeared in the great triad of long-life trinity along with Amitayus and Ushnishavijaya. Legend has it White Tara was born from a tear of compassion that fell from the left eye of Avalokitesvara. Therefore her compassion to sentient beings is compared to the love that of a mother to her child. White Tara is white in color. Vajrasattva is the sixth vajra holder and a dharma prince of the five Buddhas. He is a prominent deity of the Esoteric Buddhism and literally the intangible creator of Tantrayana Buddhism. Vajrasattva has the power to withdraw calamity. His famous Hundred-syllable mantra is regarded as an essential mantra for purification as well as to offset any imperfection of a yoga session.

We spent many hours on the road in Amdo heading from Xining in the northeast to Mount Amnye Machen in the south. It was an uncomfortable, bumpy journey, but the breathtaking scenery made you forget about leg cramps. As the mountains rolled by the window, occasionally a stupa would punctuate the landscape. These structures contain sacred Buddhist relics and symbolize the Buddha’s presence in the world.
