Constructed in 1957, Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Track was a premier destination for dog racing and the spectators who came to watch and place bets on the races. Florida was the first state in the nation to make greyhound racing legal starting in 1931 and with 11 tracks holding live dog races, the Sunshine State was the unofficial U.S. capital of greyhound racing for years, with only seven tracks holding races in five other states — West Virginia, Arkansas, Iowa, Texas, and Alabama. In 2018, Florida passed a bill banning greyhound racing at pari-mutuel betting facilities, forcing the tracks to either close up shop or reinvent themselves as casinos or off-track betting operations.
