North Uist in the Outer Hebrides of Britain is a very unusual landscape. From the ground it looks pretty solid, but walk in any direction from the road that crosses it and you soon get lost in an archipelago of lakes. An aerial view (from one of the few peaks) reveals that there is actually more water than land on this island. Visit in the summer months and the lakes and ponds are filled with waterlilies and the air filled with the croaky call of the elusive corncrake. This 16x16 inch oil painting is based on photos I took from a visit a few years back, and not at all influenced by a more famous painting of waterlilies!
