This truck would have been used in the 19th century to transport ore from the Tamar Valley copper mines to ships waiting at Morwellham Quay (Devon, England). The ships would transport the ore down the River Tamar, around Lands End and up to South Wales, which had a plentiful supply of the other essential ingredient required for copper production, i.e. coke to fire the smelting furnaces. Morwellham was established in the 10th century by Benedectine monks from Tavistock Abbey to carry goods to and from Plymouth. Later, tin, lead and silver ore were transported from the Quay.
