The New York Cubans were a Negro league baseball team that played during the 1930s and from 1939 to 1950. Despite playing in the Negro leagues, the team occasionally employed white-skinned Hispanic baseball players as well, because Hispanics in general were largely ignored by the major league baseball teams before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball.

Russetta Timing Association (RTA) held speed meets at various southern California dry lakes, beginning in 1939 and continuing well into the 1960s. It was an independent association, owned by Ray Ingram, who also owned the clocks. It flourished in part because the more prominent SCTA did not allow coupes or sedans until 1951, and RTA did. In their early years, this made RTA somewhat of an 'outlaw' as the new kid on the block that brought together the clubs with guys running traditional hot rods and not necessarily dedicated dry lake racers.

TINA TURNER 1939 - 2023

Leroy Hurte was a musician, recording engineer, musician, educator, and promoter of African-American culture. He learned the business of manufacturing records while working at Allied Record Manufacturing in Hollywood in the 1930s. In 1939, Hurte opened the Flash Record Store at 623 East Vernon Ave, where he established Bronze Records, one of the first independently owned record labels to record African-American artists. Hurte is credited with having the first self-contained R&B recording and 78 RPM record manufacturing facility inside his record store, and as a result of his tenacity, recorded many artists that otherwise may have never been heard, let alone pressed to vinyl. All told, Hurte recorded more than 100 78's by the '50s.

Watermelon is the largest vegetable crop grown in South Carolina by acreage, so it would make sense that folks would celebrate these massive veggies. Yes, watermelon are vegetables (part of the cucumber family), though botanically the argument can be made that they are a fruit. Nonetheless, the Hampton County Watermelon Festival is a week-long event that has been held yearly during the watermelon harvest time in the towns of Varnville and Hampton in South Carolina. It features activities for all ages, including watermelon related contests, races, parades, and a tasting event. Visitors can enjoy delicious foods of all kinds and, of course, plenty of free farm fresh watermelon!
