The Mother of Hops

Gunther was an established Baltimore brewery with a heritage that pre-dated Prohibition. The brewery operated until 1959 when it was purchased by Theodore Hamm, a large Minnesota-based brewer. Hamm was attempting to expand his territory into the East and bought Gunther as his first outpost, but rather than continue to brew Gunther for local customers and introduce his own brands over time, Hamm instead eliminated Gunther's on day one, essentially giving the finger to the loyal local base. Hamm only stayed for three years before selling the brewery and brands to Schaefer, a large Brooklyn-based brewer. Schaefer reintroduced Gunther, though Hamm had done so much damage that the brand never quite recovered.

The Northern Brewing Company was founded in 1890 by Louis Rueping and John A. Klinkert as the KIinkert Brewing Company. Both Klinkert and Rueping had worked many years in the brewing business before setting up this brewery in West Superior, Wisconsin. After Klinkert's partnership ended in 1898, Louis Rueping renamed the original brewery the L. Rueping Company. In the following months, he reorganized and incorporated the Northern Brewing Company. Northern eventually grew to become one of Superior's most prosperous industries. At one time, Northern beer outsold the combined sales of all other brands in the city.

The Pearl Brewing Company (also known as the Pearl Brewery or just Pearl) was an American brewery, established in 1883 in Downtown San Antonio, Texas, USA. In 1985, Pearl's parent company purchased the Pabst Brewing Company and assumed the Pabst name. In 1999, the Pabst Brewing Company began transferring its production to Miller Brewing, on a contract basis, and closing all of its breweries. Pearl beer is still in production at Miller's Fort Worth, Texas, facility, but the Pearl Brewery in San Antonio was closed in 2001. Since then, the former brewery was purchased by Silver Ventures, Inc., which has made the property the crown jewel in revitalization efforts of southern Midtown and northern Downtown San Antonio.

Elsinore is the fictional brand of beer that the 1983 Canadian comedy movie Strange Brew is centered around. The story focuses on two unemployed brothers, Bob and Doug McKenzie, who place a live mouse in a beer bottle in an attempt to blackmail the local beer store into giving them free Elsinore beer, but are told to take up the matter with management at the Elsinore brewery. Their plan doesn't quite work out as instead of getting free beer, the brothers are given jobs on the bottling line inspecting bottles for mice which is almost as good, right? Needless to say, hijinks ensue and make this ridiculous movie into the cult classic that it is.

The Augustiner Brewery was first mentioned by name in 1328, established within an Augustianian Monastery which had been settled just outside the Munich city walls in an area called Haberfeld (or Haferfeld – "oat field") in 1294. The Monastery complex was the largest sacred building in Munich until the completion of the Frauenkirche cathedral in 1494. The Augustinian monks supplied beer to the Bavarian Royal Wittelsbach family until 1589, at which time the Hofbräu brewery was founded.

Falstaff Retro Defunct Beer

Back in 1933, William B. Wreford along with other investors purchased the property that became known as the Sebewaing Brewing Company. With a capital stock of $150,000, they established a goal of 20,000 barrels per year of Sebewaing Old Style. The then Sebewaing Beverage Company retained many of the existing stockholders. A modest 12 to 15 employees were planned to begin the operation. William B. Wreford was quite active with different business ventures in the Detroit area during the the early 1900’s. He also dabbled in the political landscape as the photo shows. He was the first president of the brewery after prohibition ended and held that office until 1936.

Brewmaster Paul Fleckenstien was born in 1836 at Hoerstein in Bavaria. His family’s long history in the brewing trade dated to the early 1700s. It was natural that he and his three brothers would follow that same trade when they came to America in 1864. They first worked in Faribault in Rice County. Fleckenstien soon decided his opportunities were better at another brewery — Schimek’s in Blue Earth.

The Iroquois Brewery was successor to the Jacob Roos Brewery, originally founded in 1842. Much of the Iroquois advertising that appeared after prohibition cites this 1842 date as the brewery's founding. The brewery was located between Hickory and Pratt Streets in Buffalo, N.Y. It was operated by Jacob Roos and, after his death, by George Roos, until 1892, when it was sold to Leonard Burgwerger. Burgwerger razed the buildings and built a new brewery on the site. This was the start of the Iroquois Brewing Company. Iroquois survived prohibition by brewing soda and near beer, and reopened shortly after prohibition ended in April 1933. Iroquois grew and prospered after prohibition and became the largest brewer in Buffalo.

William J. Lemp of St. Louis created Falstaff in 1903. When Prohibition forced the closure of the Lemp brewery, local brewer Joseph Griesedieck purchased the Falstaff name in 1920 and changed his company’s name to Falstaff Corp., eventually to be renamed Falstaff Brewing. Post prohibition, Falstaff would become the country’s third-largest brewer from 1957 to 1960, with its production peaking at 7 million barrels in 1966. The ’70s introduced a set of mascots – Fannie and Fearless. Existing in cartoon form, the duo were pictured having assorted adventures from skydiving and motorcycling to waterskiing and bear hunting, all of which included their favorite beer, Falstaff.

Goebel Brewing Company was a brewing company in Detroit, Michigan from 1873 to 1964 eventually acquired late in its existence by Stroh Brewery Company. The beer was locally popular in Detroit from the company's inception, but grew in popularity and was eventually available in many states for a brief period in the 1940s, with an ad campaign in Life magazine that featured restaurant ads from many famous eateries around the country using Goebel beer as an ingredient. The beer, billed as a "light lager", was golden in color, and was noticeably drier than most everyday beers of the era. Their longtime mascot was a bantam, called Brewster Rooster, who wore attire with Goebel's logo, and the beer was a long-time sponsor of Detroit Tigers baseball.

Feldschlößchen or Feldschlösschen can refer to two different brands of beer, produced in breweries located in Dresden, Germany and Rheinfelden, Switzerland. The latter is the biggest brewery in Switzerland and was founded in 1876. It bought out Cardinal in 1991. It was bought by Carlsberg in 2000. The brewery is in the shape of a castle and Feldschlösschen means 'small castle in the fields' in German.

The Snuggly Duckling is a pub located somewhere in the woods, not too far from Rapunzel's tower. Despite having what seems to be a "cute" name, the Snuggly Duckling is definitely not a cute place. The restaurant hosts many of Corona's ruffians and thieves who use the location as a hangout.

Truly a fine beer. Brewed in Duluth, Minnesota at Peoples Brewing Company. Peoples Brewing Co. opened in 1908 and closed in 1920 it was open for 12 years.

Eagle Brewery, Inc. of San Jose, California opened in 1906 and closed in 1920. As a Pre-prohibition brewery, information and collectibles are rather hard to come by and desirable to collectors. They brewed a number of beers, but Joe's Steam Beer was arguably their best seller.

Spoetzl Brewery is a brewery located in Shiner, Texas, U.S. It produces a diverse line of Shiner Beers, including their flagship Shiner Bock, a dark lager that is now distributed countrywide. The brewery is owned by the Gambrinus Company, a family-owned company based in San Antonio, which also owns Trumer Brewery in Berkeley, California. The Spoetzl Brewery started in 1909. It was originally named "The Shiner Brewing Association," (SBA) and was founded by German and Czech immigrants who had settled around the central Texas town of Shiner. Unable to find the type of beer they had known in their home countries, they decided to brew their own. It is the oldest independent brewery in Texas and one of the oldest independent breweries in the U.S.

Moe's Tavern, or simply called Moe's, is the local bar in Springfield. The bar is named after its owner: Moe Szyslak. It is the only known tavern in Springfield, though there is a Joe's Tavern in Shelbyville. Moe's is located right next to King Toot's Music Store; however, it will vary occasionally, and has been featured opposite both Bart's factory, It Blows (the downtown air conditioner store), First Church of Springfield, and a celebrity club. In the episode "Brake My Wife, Please", Moe's Tavern is shown to be only a brief walking distance away from 742 Evergreen Terrace. It's also hinted that it was only kept in business because Moe frequently bribes Mayor Quimby whenever he pays an inspection visit.
