Puffin head

Wandering Albatross, Diomedea exulans,calling to its mate from the nest on Prion Island, just off the coast of South Georgia in the Southern Atlantic. When the birds return to breed, or when one has been out fishing & returns to the nest the couple conduct a pair bonding ritual. Nests are on the ground in the tussock grass & are well spread out from each other. Both the male and the female take care of the nest and the young. Wandering Albatrosses spend most of their life in flight, landing only to breed and feed. Canon 500D, zoom lens. (Featured in Topshelf Wildlife, and Other Groups.)

The ‘I’iwi or Scarlet honeycreeper was once among the most common birds in Hawai’i. Today they are found mostly on the Island of Hawai’i, Maui and Kaua’i. The population is decreasing and their conservation status is “Vulnerable”. I find this sad since they are so beautiful and vivid colored.
