Looking across the moat of this wonderful castle in the centre of Caerphilly in Wales to its massive south facing walls and towers. The castle was built in the late 13th century by Gilbert de Clare in order to secure this part of Wales from being taken over by the Welsh leader Llewellyn ap Gruffudd, Begun in 1268 - it was immediately attacked! A pathway alongside the moat at Raglan Castle in Monmouthshire, Wales, as it winds its way between the walls. The castle was built rather late, being started by Sir William ap Thomas in the 1430s. His son, Sir William Herbert, a Knight of the Garter, continued building, creating a home rather than a fortress - though it looks formidable! Chepstow Castle in Monmouthshire, Wales, standing above a crossing point on the River Wye, is one of the oldest castles in Britain and it boasts the oldest doors in Europe! Building began in 1067 under William Fitz Osbern, forming the southernmost in a chain of castles guarding the Welsh Marches. It was later used in the conquest of Gwent in the 12th century. Rumelihisari or Rumelian Castle sitting on the European bank of the Bosporus at Istanbul - where it connects the Black Sea to the Mediterranean. Its construction was ordered by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II and was originally planned in preparation for a seige of Constantinople (now Istanbul) - then a Byzantine city.
