The Texas Fuel Company was founded in 1902 in Beaumont, Texas, by Joseph S. Cullinan, Thomas J. Donoghue, and Arnold Schlaet upon the discovery of oil at Spindletop. The company was not set up to drill wells or to produce crude oil, so Cullinan organized Producers Oil Company in 1902, as a group of affiliated investors to fund the needed infrastructure. With their wells running at full tilt, Texas Fuel opened their own service stations featuring their own gasoline. In 1932, they introduced high performance Fire Chief Gasoline, followed by Sky Chief Gasoline in 1938, as some of the first higher-octane fuel options.

Plymouth’s boxy Belvedere GTX may have been late to the party in '67, but the division cleaned house on everybody else in '68 with the Road Runner. Unlike the GTX, this time Plymouth got it right; dropping in a 335 bhp 383 cid V-8 with 440 Super Commando heads and cam in a bare bones 3,000-lb, two-door hardtop with a 4-speed synchro transmission. Base price was $2,870.00, skinned down to a rubber floor mat and non-pleat taxicab interior. If you wanted carpet and bright work, you had to drop another $79.20 for the décor group. More power by way of a 425 bhp, 426 cid Hemi would cost you $714.30, but the base car was quick and simple, and that's exactly how most buyers liked it.

The first gen Firebird went on sale February 23, 1967 with five different engine options offered, each with slightly different trim levels. The highest performing model in 1967 was the Firebird 400 that came with a very respectable (for the time) 325 horsepower. Pontiac started out strong in the sales department that first year, and while total production of 82,560 was the lowest of any pony car that year (except the Plymouth Barracuda), it should be noted that sales didn’t begin until mid-season.

Founded in 1911 as Electric Autolite in Toledo, Ohio, the company produced generators to power early day buggy lamps. In 1927, they acquired an automotive battery manufacturer, and in 1935, Electric Autolite decided they should get into the business of manufacturing spark plugs. In 1936 the first spark plug was produced at their Fostoria, Ohio plant. Electric Autolite's products were expanded further to include starter motors, ignition systems, and wire and cable products. With a full range of automotive electrical goods in their stables, Electric Autolite began securing supply contracts with leading car manufacturers, providing their products as OEM installations, and allowing Electric Autolite to move into a phase of explosive growth.

Drag race starting times by the flagman in the early days were not uniformly accurate, so a new timing system could hopefully be developed to correct the problems and ensure a fair race. As the story goes, Chrondek Corporation founder Oilver Riley was approached in 1962 with an idea of a step-light countdown system. LaVerne, California-based Chrondek was already working on portable timing systems before this proposal, and began refocusing their efforts to include what is now known as the standard Christmas Tree, which was debuted by Chrondek at the 1963 U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Like other performance pioneers, Ed Iskenderian was a Southern California hot rodder in the years leading up to World War II, learning speed secrets in an effort to make his own T roadster go faster. Grinding camshafts came after the war when a sudden demand for parts - fueled by returning GIs eager to get back to hot rodding - was so great that Iskenderian was faced with a long wait for a cam he wanted for his own car. Figuring he could do as just as good himself, he bought a surplus cylindrical grinder, converted it into a cam-grinding machine, and went to work. He wasn't just making a similar cam to those available at the time - he made them better, rightfully earning him the nickname of 'The Camfather.'

The contest was based on special album recorded by The Tigers and the grand prize was a special 1965 Pontiac GTO named “GeeTO Tiger”. It was specially equipped with over 28 factory options and had special Hurst Gold body paint, Hurst mag wheels, even gold-plated Hurst Shifter, Tri-Power 4-speed gearbox, suspension package, power steering, power brakes, etc. GeeTO Tiger was specially designed for the contest. Ace Wilson's Royal Pontiac dealership campaigned numerous race prepped GTO's over the years and they were well known as drag strip killers.
