Adult Magellanic Penguins, Spheniscus magellanicus, on the beach having just returned from fishing. The adults will return to their nesting burrows on the grasslands above the beach. Carcass Island, the Falklands. Jackass Penguins is the local name. There are several juveniles among the adults. The adults are recognised by their strong black & white markings. Black-browed albatross pair bonding (Thalassarche melanophrys, order Procellariiforme), also known as the black-browed mollymawk. Prior to mating & during the breeding cycle when one of the parents returns from fishing expeditions the pair renew their relationship with extensive pair bonding rituals. (Featured in Closeups in Nature, & Other groups.) The bills of Procellariiformes are also unique in that they are split into between seven and nine horny plates. They produce a stomach oil made up of wax esters and triglycerides that is stored in the proventriculus. Chile and Argentina, satellite image. North is at top. Chile is a long country which occupies the strip of land between the Pacific coast and the Andes mountains in the west of South America. Argentina extends east from Chile to the Atlantic coast. The border between Argentina and Chile follows the Andes mountain range. These mountains extend the entire length of western south America. The most southerly tip of South America, Cape Horn, lies within the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. The Falkland Islands lie further to the east, they are an oversees territory of the UK, although sovereignty is claimed by Argentina.
