Joe Byrne was Ned Kelly's best friend and a member of the Kelly Gang. His knack for language was demonstrated in his ability to speak Cantonese and write song lyrics. He transcribed all of Ned's letters and was his most trusted ally. Unfortunately he was also an opium addict who turned on his childhood friend, murdering him in cold blood before dying himself at the siege of Glenrowan.

This design incorporates elements that symbolise the ssence of Joe Byrne's outlaw life: the iron helmet he wore in battle at Glenrowan, his grey mare Music, and his impassioned letter to his closest confidante Aaron Sherritt.

Joe Byrne was a literate outlaw and several examples of his handwriting still exist including his signature. While on the run he referred to himself as the enforced outlaw.

2020 marks the 140th anniversary of the Glenrowan Siege. To commemorate, we have this exclusive anniversary design.

Aaron Sherritt: Bush larrikin, trouble-maker and frontiersman. Tough as redwood and flash as Lucifer. Aaron was Joe Byrne's closest friend but their connection to Ned Kelly would destroy them all.

"I always said this bloody armour would bring us to grief!" Thus spake Joe Byrne to Ned Kelly as the pair of them reeled from their injuries during the Glenrowan siege. Joe's unique looking armour should have made him more protected from injury yet, true to his prediction, faith in the armour was unfounded - fatally so.

This was the proud boast of the tiny inn used by the Kelly Gang in 1880. Ann Jones was a wily Irishwoman whose home and business soon became the scene of one of the most terrifying and momentous occasions in Australian history.
