Narrowboats and houseboats moored just downstream from Newbury in, Berkshire, on the Kennet and Avon Canal. This section of the canal - or navigation (combined river and canal) began its construction in 1718 under the supervision of engineer John Hore of Newbury and in 1724 the section between Reading and Newbury was opened. The remainder of the length to Bristol was completed between 1794 and 1810. The canal fell into disuse due to the coming of the railway but was restored and fully reopened in 1990. The lock at Aldermaston on the Kennet and Avon Canal. This is the view from the wharf next to the swing bridge. The lock was built between 1718 and 1723 being supervised by John Hore a noted engineer from Newbury. It was originally turf sided but was enlarged in the mid 1700s and given scalloped brick walls. These were heightened in 1984 during restoration. The nearby building was once a brewery founded in 1770 and Its beer barrels would have been shipped from this busy wharf.

Hungerford Wharf is close to the centre of the market town of Hungerford in West Berkahire, This is a peaceful scene now, but in the past it would have been a hive of industry with canal boats loading and unloading, goods such as Bath stone for building, agricultural produce and equipment, coal, and general goods. The Rose of Hungerford is a wide beam boat operated by the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust, taking passengers along this lovely waterway. This image has a textured art finish

The upstream approach to Padworth Lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal just below Aldermaston Wharf. This lock, no.96, was originally built between 1718 and 1723 and was supervised by local engineer John Hore of Newbury. It was turf-sided but was rebuilt in brick in 1982-4. Very few turf-sided locks now remain. The canal was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Thames and Avon rivers, providing a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading and the Thames.

This elegant footbridge, No. 83, crosses over the Kennet and Avon Canal is at Hungerford in Berkshire, England. It's found to the east and just downstream of the town's wharf and road bridge, In the early to mid 19th century the canal was once busy with commercial traffic transporting goods such as Bath stone for the grand buildings then springing up in the area. The canal, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to provide a link between Bristol and London avoiding the rough roads.

The view from the bridge over the Kennet and Avon Canal at Kintbury in West Berkshire. The canal passes through the village by way of Kintbury Lock, taking us to Hungerford, Devizes, Bath and Bristol. This peaceful scene would once have been busy with canal boats taking goods, especially Bath stone, to Reading and London, together with agricultural goods and produce. This was the view in late October with the water vreflecting the golden foliage of the surrounding trees.

A canal boat moored just below Aldermaston Lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal. This is known as a 'winding hole' where narrowboats as long as 72 feet can turn round. The building on the left was once Strange's Brewery - giving the lock its alternative name - Brewery Lock. The area here is called Aldermaston Wharf and was once a hive of industry with boats loading and unloading their cargoes. Now it's busy with leisure traffic!

Walking along Kennetside in Reading on a sunny day in early autumn. This is almost at the point where the River Kennet meets the Thames. In front is the bridge taking the railway line to London Waterloo over the river and in the background are the gantries of the Great Western line to Paddington which crosses the river a little further on. Just past the first bridge on the right is the site of the old Reading gasworks, the last gasholder being demolished in March 2022.

Ahead of us the canal leads to Hungerford, Bath and Bristol while behind us are Newbury, Reading and the Thames. This image, which has been finished as an oil pastel painting, was captured on quite a busy autumn afternoon.

The Kennet and Avon Canal at Aldermaston Wharf in West Berkshire. Beautifully peaceful now but once this was a hive of industry. After the completion of the canal in 1810, trade and commerce increased and a community grew up here which included all-important carpenters who serviced the locks and bridges. The Wharf would have seen exports of timber and agricultural produce and the import of coal, groceries and manufactured goods. However, with the coming of the railway canal trade declined.

A sudden flurry of activity on an autumn afternoon at Kintbury Lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal in West Berkshire. A boat has just emerged from the lock to carry on travelling upstream towards Newbury, Bath and Bristol, passing moored boats on the way. The waterway passes through the village here - almost through the centre! Tranquil now but once a hive of industrial activity with working boats carrying such goods as Bath stone for the grand buildings in London.

The tranquil view from the towpath near the Weavers Cottages in West Mills, Newbury belies the once-bustling corn mills powered by the River Kennet. Hovis bought the mill in 1921, which was then sold in the 1950s. The tall granary building across the river stands as a testament to its industrial history. The swing bridge on the right leads to the town centre, while the mill's sluice gates can be seen on the left. The reflections of the mill buildings and trees on the calm water of the Kennet and Avon Canal.

A narrowboat waiting just below Blake's Lock on the River Kennet at Kennetside, in Reading, Berkshire. Blake's Lock is the first (or last) lock on the waterway. This stretch has been navigable since medieval times and was once an important supply route to mighty Reading Abbey - the abbot being the river's controller. Despite being on the Kennet, this lock is managed as part of the Thames although still manually operated.

The Town Lock at Newbury in West Berkshire on a sunny autumn day. This is the view as you join the towpath on the western side of Town Bridge (or The Water Bridge). Here the Kennet divides, the left fork heading to the old West Mills (now housing) whilst steer right to take you through the lock and onwards towards Bath and Bristol. The lock itself dates from 1796 and is Grade 2 listed. It has a rise/fall of 3ft 6in (0.07m).

Looking downstream at County Lock on the River Kennet Navigation in Reading, Berkshire, England. This is close to the centre of Reding and the Oracle shopping centre. The area here was once the hub of Simonds brewery and would have been busy with water traffic. The site is now mainly apartments and offices The lock has the lowest fall of any lock on the Kennet and Avon - only 1 foot! The footpath crossing the River Kennet at Hissey Bridge near Burghfield, Berkshire, England. Here the towpath crosses the river to the south bank to continue westwards towards Theale. The bridge itself rises over the river as a wooden arch topped with a railing. The Kennet forms part of the 87 mile long Kennet and Avon Canal, constructed between 1794 and 1810 to enable goods - especially Bath Stone - to be carried by boat between Bristol and London via Reading.

This lock was constructed between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of the engineer John Hore of Newbury. It was part of the Kennet Navigation - that is part river and part canal. The Kennet and Avon canal was constructed to join Bristol and London via Reading making the transport of goods smoother. It closed due to the Great Western Railway but was reopened in 1990.
