Art by Duy Truong...................General Oliver Howard opened the door. He said, "You may come in now." President Grant came out from behind his desk and greeted each of us. I could see that General Oliver Howard and Eli S. Parker had prepared him for my associates and he did well to hold back his astonishment at seeing talking animals for the first time (and probably his last). Alfred swept his hat across the carpet in a grand gesture. He said, "It is indeed a pleasure to meet you, Mr. President. I do thank you for meeting with us this afternoon."

Art by Duy Truong................................(Earlier) Zeke took me aside. He said, "I'm going next door and bring back magic dancing shoes." He gave me a wink and I caught on. We found a great pair of shoes and rushed back to the post office. Yep—these were enchanted shoes guaranteed to turn anyone into a dancing master. "Magic shoes!" Zeke polished them off with his sleeve and claimed he could feel the aura of the magic shoes. Tom put them on and walked around the room. "I can feel the magic!" he said. Cedric, Zeke, and Alfred began playing a waltz. I counted, "One, two, three, long, short, short," like Mrs. Prescott taught us at River Falls Elementary. I said, "The magic shoes are working. Look at Tom dance!"........................

He was a bit hesitant but soon was aboard Polly. We did a figure eight around the village and then sailed off for the Chiricahua mountains. I knew that much of this was familiar to him; however seeing it from the air would be a great experience for him. When we arrived, we settled to the grassy plain and I pointed to the posts that set the Southwest boundary. A sign said Chiricahua Reservation. I said, "You can see the post set here to mark your land. The Great White Chief has declared these lands off limits to whites. Any that are there now...

Art by Duy Truong.......... We were ushered to the palace garden that rested alongside the shimmering blue waters of Lake Kira. It was a cool, clear morn with a slight breeze that drifted ever so gently across the waters. A distant range of snow-capped mountaintops undulated and swelled like a line of long lost fairytale sandcastles. Princess Catherine ( the queen of the bees) gave us a warm welcome. No longer did she look at all like a bee. Her hair was now a golden honey that glistened spectacularly in the sunlight. She explained that she had important business with the bees to attend to after our meeting. "They are my little darlings. Not a day goes by without a crisis!" She laughed; then sat with us at copper-topped tables with eme...

I decided to remain silent while the magnitude of an Indian princess appearing from the sky on a giant bird sunk in. "Psst," I whispered to Zeke and Cedric. "Be ready to lift me into the air on my signal. We are going to do some illusions now." Zeke wondered, "Are you going to do any card tricks?" "Silly, Zeke—we will let them think I am an angel that flew in bearing a message of great importance." I let a full five minutes go by while I listened to their chatter. Did you know that the town of North Platte, Nebraska was the hometown of Buffalo Bill? Well, it was!

Book #6 The Wurtherington Diary : Buffalo Bill and the Pony Express. Art by Duy Truong.........................This is a dreamier version of the final scene from Buffalo Bill and the Pony Express,......She sent us home and we were soon enjoying the comforts of my bedroom and a goodnight's rest in our own beds. I read another chapter from Buffalo Bill, The King of the Border Men to Zeke, Cedric, and Polly. As I tucked them in, I asked if they had learned anything from our adventure with the Pony Express and Buffalo Bill.

Buffalo Bill Cody

William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody (February 26, 1846 – January 10, 1917) was an American soldier, bison hunter, and showman. He was born in Le Claire, Iowa Territory (now the U.S. state of Iowa), but he lived for several years in his father's hometown in modern-day Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, before the family returned to the Midwest and settled in the Kansas Territory. Buffalo Bill started working at the age of eleven, after his father's death, and became a rider for the Pony Express at age 15. During the American Civil War, he served the Union from 1863 to the end of the war in 1865. Later he served as a civilian scout for the US Army during the Indian Wars, receiving the Medal of Honor in 1872.
