The first California Free Former World Professional Skateboard Championships was held over the Summer of 1976 at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, California. The event was the largest skateboard competition ever held up until that time, and its significant cash prizes changed skateboarding history, as it created a true professional tier in the sport.

Skate Rags was a Southern California based clothing company that operated from the mid-1980s to early 1990s. Their tagline was “To Fit and Survive” and as such, marketed their apparel as being a bit more durable, though not sure if that was just marketing BS, or if there was any truth to it, I just know my SR gear didn’t fare much better than any of my other stuff. Nonetheless, Skate Rags had some cool designs and built up a great following, but as the skateboarding landscape changed in the 90s, they struggled to find their place and folded. Their team riders included Mike McGill, Tom Groholski, Monty Nolder, Sam Cunningham, Ben Schroeder, Mark Partain, and Rob Mertz, to name a few. Rip it up!

Despite being the 23rd most populous city in Texas, Carrollton has maintained a quaint, small town vibe that many municipalities aspire to, but in the early '70s, this once rural community became an unexpected destination for skateboarders from all over the country. Wait, what? Because everything is bigger in Texas, at some point, somebody decided to build what was the world's largest skatepark in Carrollton - the Free Flight Skatepark. It was larger than anything California had to offer at the time and drew skaters in from coast-to-coast to experience the new park. From what we can see, the park ran for at least a decade, as there are records of events, competitions, and contest results into the early '80s before the trail goes cold.

In the early days of skateboarding, flexible skateboard decks were highly desirable, and in 1975, Powerflex came up with one of the most flexible decks yet. Made with what they described as pull-truded, high-mat, roving-content fiberglass, these decks were not only flexible, but could withstand over 2 tons of weight without breakage. Powerflex proved this in several ways, but the most memorable was having an elephant plant a foot on a complete skateboard. In addition to making decks, they also made some pretty innovative wheels using their own unique compounds and offered them in more colors and sizes than other manufacturers at the time.

Skateboarding got off the ground in the late ’50s as boys began nailing roller skate trucks to boards and as interest in skateboarding continued to build, various brands began offering increasingly better commercially made skateboards. 1964 saw the first issue of Skateboarder Magazine as numerous exhibitions and contests swept the West Coast. Sidewalk surfin’ was way in and continued to spread far beyond California as kids of all ages took to the streets, enjoying the fun activity of skateboarding.

In the '80s, skateboarding was either having a resurgence, or just coming into its own, all depending on who you ask. While there was no shortage of big name skateboard manufacturers, there were also quite a few entry level brands that skipped the skateboard shop in favor of mass marketing through big box stores. Valterra Skateboards was one such brand that sold complete skateboards at a fraction of the price of the majors. This worked out well for mom and dad in deciding to pop for one or not, just in case their kid's 'possessed to skate' phase was just that - a phase. All told, Valterra was one of the better entry level mass market manufacturers and this 1986 Ramp Champ design is a fine example of the cheesy graphic themes they employed.

X-Caliber Trucks was born in 1976 in Torrance, California and would go on to create some of the more innovative designs in skateboarding. While trucks were their core product, the brand would eventually release a suite of products, including decks and complete skateboards.
