A stretch of the River Kennet as it flows through Reading on its way to join the Thames. This area was important in medieval times, being the main transport link for the huge and powerful Reading Abbey, founded in 1121 by Henry I. Later known as the Kennet Navigation, it was a stretch of navigable waterway between Reading and Newbury constructed between 1718-23. This became part of the Kennet and Avon Canal opened in 1810 to link Bristol and Reading - and on to London via the Thames. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

A view of the River Wye as it flows through the Wye Valley seen from Symonds Yat Rock in Gloucestershire. The 5th longest river in the UK (134 miles), the Wye flows from its source near Plynlimon in Ceredigion in mid-Wales to the sea at thr Severn Estuary at Chepstow. The Wye Valley at this point is a popular tourist destination, with views over Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Monmouthshire. The valley, unsurprisingly, is also a designated Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

A scene captured late in the afternoon on the River Deben near Woodbridge in Suffolk with an impressionist finish. This is the tidal stretch of the river which flows on to meet the North Sea at Felixtowe. Not only popular as a centre for watersports, particularly sailing and canoeing, this is an important ecological area - designated as a RAMSAR site (protected wetland) and an AONB (Area of Outsrtanding Natural beauty. A riverside path leads into the town of Woodbridge and its quayside.

A footbridge over the River Pang in the watermeadows adjacent to the village of Pangbourne in Berkshire. The footpath leads from Pangbourne and follws the river, crossing here, to emerge at Tidmarsh a mile or so away. The Pang is a chalk stream which rises in Compton on the Berkshire Downs (although this is dependant on rainfall) and flows through West Berkshire to join the Thames at Pangbourne. It has a wide variety of wildlife, supported by a large nature reserve at Tidmarsh.

A rather loaded felucca being pulled along the shoreline of one of the islands in the River Nile between Aswan and Luxor. These islands are very fertile agricultural land in contrast to the surrounding desert. Very possibly the men in the boat are being ferried to work! The Nile has been the lifeblood of Egypt for thousands of years enabling the ancient Egyptian civilisation to flourish. This image has been given a chalk pastel finish - developed from my original photograph.

The area either side of the river is rich farmland but just behind is arid desert! In this scene we can also see fishermen in their small boats reaping their own harvest. The image is finished with a chalk pastel effect developed from my original photograph.

The Kennet and Avon Canal as it passes through Newbury in Berkshire. This scene, taken from the West Mills swing bridge shows the canal as it heads towards the centre of the town, about to pass through Town Lock. On the right bank is the site of West Mills - Newbury was once a busy agricultural and woollen textile manufacturing centre. The tower of St Nicolas church, restored during the early 1500s stands above the surrounding buildings.

A boat moored on the bank of the River Thames not far from Wallingford in Oxfordshire. Here we are walking along the Thames Path National Trail between Wallingford and Benson. A lovely stretch of the Thames with trees crowded along the banks but with the occasional gap allowing for nice, peaceful moorings. To our left the towpath takes us to the quaint market town of Wallingford with its many independent shops - and a frequent setting for Midsomer Murders!

The River Dun as it flows through the town of Hungerford in West Berkshire. Hungerford is probably better known for the Kennet and Avon Canal which passes close to its centre but it is the Dun which is its river, the Kennet flowing round the edge of the town. Here a house is reflected in its waters on a morning in late November. The river rises in Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire, and joins the River Kennet here at Hungerford.

One of Ireland's heritage towns, Trim is situated on the River Boyne. It once had the oldest and largest religious settlements in the country. The town is dominated by the medieval Trim Castle, which was built by Hugh de Lacy in 1173. The largest Norman castle in Europe, it is now restored and visitors can access the 75ft square keep and grounds by guided tour.

The River Garry at Killiecrankie, near Pitlochry, Perthshire, Scotland. Killiecrankie (Gaelic: Coille Chneagaidh) is a village in Perth and Kinross, Scotland on the River Garry. It lies at the Pass of Killiecrankie, by the A9 road. In 1689, during the Jacobite Rebellion, the Battle of Killiecrankie was fought on the northern edge of the village. It was the first victory of the Jacobites – their Highland charge terrified and overwhelmed the British Government army under General Hugh MacKay in only 10 minutes. Donald MacBean, one of William of Orange’s supporters, having lost the contest, is said to have cleared the pass, from one bank to the other, at “The Soldier’s Leap”.
